I saw these set up on display in the Catalog Department of my local JC Penney. They were regularly retailing for $159.99, but have been marked down to $99.99. Not sure if all stores have them (the one here in Clearwater, FL does), but if you are still looking for a decent DVD Player at a reasonable price, it might be worth a look...

This IS a great deal. A buddy of mine grabbed the last one in stock at our local JCP. It had a price marked at $159, but was only $112 after tax!

It's the first stand-alone player that I've owned, so I can't compare it to other players, but so far we are loving it. The sound quality is outstanding and we're just running it through a standard stereo receiver.

Get 'em while they're hot!

:D

<< Ugh... it's not progressive scan is it ? I don't think... >>

Do you actually think there are any TRUE prog. scan standalone players at this price range?

One of the most highlly touted prog. scan players is the Panasonic RP-91...and it's over $400.

Xsecurity: I can't find anything in the owner's manual that would indicate that it is progressive scan. So, what am I missing? I'm new to DVD players and the huge number of features and capabilities is almost too much (I kind of wish this one would play MP3 formatted CDs, but only plays standard CDs, for example).

Maybe that helps......

no it's not progressive. there's not a really a point to having a progressive scan dvd player w/o progressive scan tv anyways.

I had this player until I sold it, and it pretty much SUCKS! It won't play CD-R's at all (not any kind), it won't play any kind of the Video CD's (even the store bought ones), and it's probably the only DVD player out there right now that doesn't play Video CDs... Even cheap ass Apex units play them..... so it's a shame.... Otherwise, it's fine... but so are the others...

I would consider Oritron at Target for $60 or Apex at Walmart for $80 to be a better deal.
Also, JVC makes progressive scan players that play VCDs, Super VCDs and MP3's and start at $170.... and are $280 for 7-disc changer model.

DMK: The SD1700 not marketed as able to play cd-r's..... They make the SD2700 that can play cdr's and then the 2710 can play both cdr's and mp3's (both $150-$170 rougly)And as for comparing this to one of the Apex units, speaking from experience here (ive owned both), my Apex was nothing but problems. About 3-4 times a month the audio tracks would get off with the picture and i would have to pause and restart the movie to sync them back up. The build quality is another factor to be considered. The Apex felt flimsy to me (tray liked to come in and out as it pleased sometimes), as compared to the 1700 which seems to be a much sturdier build. About 6 months ago I gave the Apex to my brother cause hes low on cash and i wanted to get a new dvd player. IMO the Apex isnt bad at all for the money, but for $99 id choose the 1700 over the Apex anyday. The 1700 fits in perfectly in my "growing" home theater. Got the 35", the dvd, the reciever, but still got my 1988 Sony Floor speakers... haha... Those are next to go... Not bad considering how old they are, but no where near up to par with todays speakers....

For anyone who cares to see some user reviews of the 1700: CLICK HERE

i got in on the daewoo 5000-n at sam's for $99 and it is a great deal! my parents sent me some dvds and vcds from home (asia) and didnt know it wouldnt play here. but with this player, it does :) the all-region feature has to be either enabled each time using the remote (i currently do this), but can also be made permanent by flashing the firmware. also, i think there is someway to disable the macrovision, but i have no reason for doing so, so i wont even attempt. this deal is still valid at my local sam's btw...

How about Sony DVP-NS300?
I went to frys, and there was an open box one that the guy would let me have for $100 (reg price $170).
Anyone know how good those are. I don't think they play MP3s, but anyone have one of those?

Just bought the 4700 Toshiba Progressive and it
beats the 6200 I paid 985 bucks for 2 yrs ago.

Progressive is only good if u have HDTV, but
even if you don't will work fine and you'll be
ready for future upgrades in your set.

Progressive is basically, all lines all the time
instead of interlaced......that's the long and
short of it, but some manufacturers (Pioneer)
had kind of a pseudo progressive a year or
so ago so it kind of muddied the water....
progressive 3:2 pulldown is what to look for,
and it's come WAY DOWN in the last year.

MP3 playback's not ready for prime time yet....
I've heard both Toshiba and Sony and they
don't work all the time and they sound like
sh(t in general on a nice audio system.

BUT:

It amazes me how many people will buy
a noname korean made dvd to save 25 bucks.....
Guys, 79 bucks for 9 months use is NOT a good deal!
179 bucks for 5 or 8 years use IS A GOOD DEAL.

Quit cheapin out when it comes to a dvd player!
If you don't have 129 bucks for a brand name
player, save up another week.

To see a chart showing the CDR, CDRW, DVDR, DVDRW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, MP3, miniDVD, and Karaoke capabilities of a wide variety of DVD player manufacturers and models, as well as other useful info such as whether there is a DvD region-hack available, go to this site:

Interestingly, the el-cheapo APEX units support many more formats than most of the expensive name brands.

El Cheapo don't last!

I know at least 5 people who can prove that undeniably
their 25 bucks worth of savings cost them years off
the life of the unit.

99 percent of the folks out there play one format
anyways: D V D

If people wanna spend less for a cheap Korean player that is fine. $ wise, they are probably smarter (maybe more frugal) than you. You paid almost $1000 for
player 2 years ago and now you spend a big load for another new one. For the depreciation of your old player (now worth $150?), you could have bought 6
Apex/Oritron/Daewoo/Etc.

And like you said, 99% of all people just want a basic player, which the cheap asian players do just fine.

I have an SD-1600 Toshiba that I bought last year and it runs like a charm. I've bought DVD players, DVD-ROMS, and CD-ROMS from Toshiba in the past and they've always been top quality. This sounds like a good deal, it is much better than getting a no-name brand el cheapo.

I have a SD-1600, which is the predecessor to the SD-1700. For the price ($134 at Mercata), it's been a great entry-level player. The biggest complaints I have about it are the cheesy remote and the inability to play CD-Rs. $99 for the SD-1700 is a hot price.

Has anyone heard of the SD-400V? I bought mine at walmart - it appears to have the exact same features as teh sd-1700 except that the finish is silver (like wegas).

Anyhow, great player. Looks beautiful on a flat screen using components. Oh yeah, don't skimp and use the RCA connections if your TV has s-video or component. I brought my DVD player home and used RCA output and noticed less quality (wavy lines).
