TOKYO (Reuters) - A senior official at Toshiba Corp. (6502.T) said establishing a unified format for next-generation DVDs based on technology backed by
Sony Corp. (6758.T) would be very difficult, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported on Monday.

...

The two sides agree that it would be best for consumers to have a common format, but shifting to a rival standard could mean a delay in product development and the commercial launch, making unification difficult.

These people should take a hard look at how badly SACD and DVD-A are doing (all but dead) before starting a format war.

DVD quality is good enough for rentals and casual owners, so given the uncertainty of two competing new formats, many people will pick "none of the above" and stick with DVD.

I am pretty sure some guys with Marketing Degrees will say that is a different business model and the demographics are different, blah, blah, blah.... and then wonder why the sales figures are so low (but are mysteriously similar to the SACD/DVD-Audio sales)....
