I purchased the above model of toshiba notebook feb/2003. Its a great notebook with windows xp home edition sp1.
I got the cd for sp2 in the mail and before the install i decided to talk to the toshiba depot here in my city and was advised by the tech that there were real problems in trying to install the sp2 and get the computer up and running. namely that after an install computers would not boot, or if they did the screen would freeze and there were also modem problems. he said he had a room full of my model of computers in his service depot to have the program removed and in some cases the large corporations had their inhouse tech remove the program and there was still a problem getting the computer to operate like it did before sp2. the tech said there was a bios problem and that he had no advice from toshiba. he told me to phone them. i did that and they said that it was M$ software problem and to phone them. i did and they gave me a case number and said that there was a lot of problems with notebooks and sp2. they mentioned Dell and models like mine. Apparently some of the newer ones would install sp2 but it was not consistent, as my neighbor bought his 2 months ago and has had a nightmare.
i have posted in other forums and get no responses, just to sit and wait. i got a case number from M$ but i understand that there support for sp2 will be winding down and so what will i do then??? I tried posting at the toshiba peer to peer home site and got no responses there. i hope to hear comments from members here. Thx

I received no responses to the above post and wondered if anyone with a laptop has encountered problems at all in loading sp2 and the ultimate operation of the box. when i spoke to M$ they mentioned Dell in particular as one that had issues. I hope that there is someone out there who has some comments. am still sitting tight before i do an install. really confused about the matter as the place that i would have it installed as i am a novice keep cautioning me about an install and just advise to keep the security uptodate. Regards

I still am hopeful that I will find a member that may also own a toshiba laptop 2410 and advise of their ex[periences in installing sp2.
As my previous posts indicate there have been problems at work with this model and by other notebook owners.
I sincerely would appreciate comments from anyone as I still have not downloaded the sp2 package and don't get information from M$ nor toshiba and would like to insure that my computer is uptodate.
Regards.

Toshiba has finally posted all the reasons not to install sp2 yet on their laptops...some reasons are incompatability with yamaha drivers, video card, usb devices are not recognized and on and on.
My colleagues jumped the gun and are so regretful.
If anyone has a Toshiba notebook and is considering installing sp2 or already have they should consult their support site.
In the USA there have been some upgrades done and are available at the support site for download, but up here in Canada there is a great long description of issues that will occur if sp2 is installed.
Thought that I should post this as there maybe notebook owners out there with problems that did not check the support site before sp2 was installed. TTFN

I have a 2410 and XP2... no problems. I didn't install the audio drivers from Toshiba and just used the ones built into XP. My USB, video card and everything else is working flawlessly. I'm using a clean install and not the Windows install that the laptop came with.

Thanx Wobble Wobble for the reply. Just wondering if you are from the USA as the models and their components are different than the toshiba 2410 that were shipped to Canada and that is where the problems are for us as the boxes had parts from another country according to Toshiba support here and therein is the problem
I mentioned that I tried to use the Windows Graphic driver I believe it was GeForce upgrade when it was in windows and what a catastrophe I had on my hands. I had to get it uninstalled right away and go to the toshiba support site and download the original.
I hope that you see this and get back to me, as I highly suspect that you are one of the fortunate ones from the US with an easy install of sp2. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Wobble Wobble, I appreciate very much your interest. Did you look at the support site with the list of issues.
The one that toshiba mentioned in particular was the yamahao drivers.
You mentioned that you did a clean start in your earlier post so I gather that you go rid of the watered down windows and put in the full blown version???? Cost a few bucks I guess, eh??
What was your reason to do that? As I imagine that you still have the other programs that came with the box? Is there a benefit to do this? As you can probably tell I am a computer novice.
One thing for sure is that I had my computer tweaked about 10 months ago as it was a little sluggish by a techie that my friend uses.
After that the Windows opening sound.......is like a skipping record. His explanation is that the programs don't always load in the same order. I can understand that , but I have not changed my programs since the tweaking so i don't know what he did.
i know that i can shut off the sound but don't want to. my regular cd's speed is ok and they sound fine...but Windows at start up is BAD and at Log off it is ok.
When i took it in the techie complained about toshiba and Windows as he said the Toshiba was not like Sony for making adjustment to Windows with their disks and he bemoaned the Recovery disks and then i got the computer back making this stupid sound. Any comments on that issue?
I have an extended warranty with Toshiba on the entire computer the lcd and box til 2007. I still run the home edition andmy security programs, ZA pro firewall, adaware SE, spybot, spyware blaster, a2, Win Patrol and spysweeper..both the purchased editions and then of course my adobe photshope elements 2 and adobe photoshop CS. Norton Professional systemworks for the A/V and Go Back and I used to use Ghost and I do use System Dr. off and on. I installed Microsoft Works Suite as well when I got the computer as it was the best way to get "Word 2002".
Anymore comments on my original question and any on what i have just said.
I really appreciate that you keep in touch. Respectful Regards and I hope that you will respond. By the way did you do the GeForce update from Windows ? When I did that quite awhile ago I had mega problems and had to do an uninstall.

I reloaded Windows with another copy I had of Home. I know it isn't completely legal to do, but I like my systems as sleek and clean as possible. I wonder if Toshiba has an updated recovery CD with SP2 already integrated?

How bad is bad with respect to Windows starting up? (minutes?)

Do you have any idea what the techie did to tweak your computer? So the sound was ok before the techie tweaked it? Did it skip before you installed SP2? Does other sound skip? MP3s? Movies?

Using the recovery disc might cause some issues because if I remember correctly, the Yamaha drivers are already installed. I think what will solve your problems is getting rid of the Toshiba-installed Yamaha drivers and using the built-in Windows ones. Unless you know exactly what files the Yamaha drivers installed it will be difficult to clean out.

No, I didn't use the Geforce drivers from Windows Update, but the ones from the Toshiba site I linked to previously.

I haven't had a chance to look at the bulletin put out by Toshiba. I read it a whilie ago but I don't remember. Give me a moment to read it over and I'll see what it says.

Edit: Just read it. On this page, it has links to some new Yamaha drivers. Have you given those a try?
