Toshiba Satelite not starting up

i posted the same message on Technical Suport forum, but I need to get this resolved soon.. Mods pls feel free to lock/delete if this is is deemed inappropriate.

i just got the laptop yesterday, been trying to get it to work ever since. the original owner suggested tapping the "suspend" button that gets depressed as the lid shuts, but that didnt seem to do the trick. power LED is on, which makes me believe the laptop is still functional, i might be just missing something... anyone got an idea?
