Toshiba Portege 7020CT died :(

This is a pretty old laptop. Today i was in class and dropped my backpack, with my laptop inside. Now when I turn on the computer, the screen is all white. The computer still boots up normally, but I'm afraid the screen is what got damaged. I bought it off a wholesaler a while ago (under the table type of deal) and this laptop brought nothing but ease and joy to my college life, as I used it for programming on campus and not relying on computer labs.

This came with a docking station with a monitor output and i connected my PC's monitor and it boots fine. I can actually use it, but of course that defeats the purpose of a laptop having to carry a monitor with me eh?

Anyone ever have a similar situation where the screen just stopped functioning? Is this even repairable or should I just scrap the parts and turn my head? Grieving help would be nice, cause i'm very sad tonight 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

screen is white means its still working, inverter is still lighting the panel, its just not getting any image data, toshiba tecras are rugged, it more than likely didnt break... the fact you can get image on external monitor is excellent news, if you can, open it up, and re-seat the data cable for the lcd in its slot on the MB, probably popped out or came loose from the impact, should work like a charm, if you need help, i can try and obtain a service manual for you... but your goal is usually jsut to get the keyboard off on most models, the screen cable should plug in somwhere under there, if not its a little more extensive...

if the data cable on the MB is fine, that means the one plugged into the screen came out, and youll have to take the panel out to re-seat that one...

if your uncomfortable doing this, the good news is any service center SHOULD be able to fix it without more than a new cable. if you get qouted for anything other than that, get a second opinion... theres only a slight chance that the video actually got knocked off the mb, because like i said, you have video on a external monitor =)

let us know how things go

Thanks for the reply Paperlantern,

I tried what you suggested but it was rather harder than I expected. I took out all the screws that were visible but removing the entire section was difficult as I noticed many things inside were still somehow holding on, and I was afraid of yanking them out. The good news is that the wholesaler from where I bought it, hired my cousin to put together these laptops (at least I think, maybe just upgrades). Hopefully he can give me some pointers, I'll keep ya posted 😀 Thanks again, but it was difficult, maybe a manual would be the better bet

It is possible that the cable came loose from the LCD panel. Unfortunately, those LCD's were also known to go white, though usually it would just occur from normal usage and didn't require any jarring to cause the LCD to go white. Actually they usually power on normal and fade to white, sometimes over 30 seconds, sometimes within 1 second. A place like man and machine might be able to repair the LCD or suggest someone who can.
