Please do not consider this a thread crap, first look at the specs:
Processor Type/Speed:
AMD? K6®-2E 350 MHz Processor
Chipset: SiS 540 Chipset
Memory: 64 MB PC100 SDRAM
Drive Type: 20 GB 4200RPM Hard Drive
Warranty: One Year Limited Manufacturer Warranty
Ethernet LAN:
10/100 Mbps Auto-Configuration
1 Public WAN RJ-45 Port
7 Private LAN RJ-45 Ports
1 Private RJ-45 Uplink Port (for expansion)
Input/Output Ports & Devices:
- 16-Character x 2-line backlit LCD with Scroll Button on the front
- 1 25-pin D-SUB Connector (Centronics capable)
- 1 RJ-11 Modem Port
- Power Button (front)
- Reset Button (rear)
- Two 2.5-inch IDE drive bays accessible from the top with a slide off cover.

That's on a $199.00 unit. Don't you think that this hardware is somewhat ancient? For the same amounr of money you can built a 1gig range system with much better specs. Again, this is not a thread crap, just my opinion.

I do NOT consider you info a thread crap. :D I got an e-mail with these in them and presented them. I build too, and am not familiar with pre-built units. I would personally build the unit and add an external router, but not everyone does. I also, knew that someone with expertise in this area would be able to reveal the true value of these. Not only did you do that you were good enough to say why.;)

In your calculations that you can build a faster bigger unit for the same money did you include an 8 port switch and print server in your costs? How about server configured software with browser management already configured. This may not be the hottest deal on the net (made even colder by tigerdirect) but this server received rave reviews for usability when it came out. The S20 allows an additional HD for more storage or RAID back-up and includes automatic backup software.

I could see many applications for this unit in small work groups. So not the hottest but a very usefull application.

BTW, I got this email from TigerDirect too, then went hunting for the SG20. I ended up buying a new one on Ebay for under $250 shipped, so even better prices are around.

Don't forget the SG20 also does VPN and Wireless AP (if you add a cheap PCMCIA card). Pretty nice solution for the more demanding home or small biz network and a lot less ghetto than having a slew of things (Wireless AP, Router, Print server) coming out of an old PC.
