Toshiba M35-S320 Screen Black-Out

If the lid to my notebook is closed and the power cable is unplugged from either the laptop itself or from the wall, the screen will not power back on when I open it again. I have to restart the computer. I haven't noticed any bios updates for this notebook. Is this a common problem? I seem to recall having the same issue with my old HP notebook.
Any suggestions?
