Toshiba Libretto woes

I'm trying to resurrect a Toshiba Libretto 100ct which I purchased cheap at a hamfest allegedly as "working". Current configuration is as follows:

- P-166MMX CPU
- 64mb RAM (optional 32mb module installed)
- no hard drive (bracket was not included so I can't stick one in for troubleshooting)

No accessories were included; I just purchased the AC adapter to begin troubleshooting.

Here's where I stand:

- When I plug it in, the DC in and batt charge LEDs are lit.
- When I power it on, the power LED also lights and the speakers initialize, but that's all I get... on the sixteenth keystroke (or after holding a key long enough) it gives a system beep per keystroke. Pressing the power button again gives a short higher-pitched beep and power-off is normal. The LCD does not initialize at any point.
- When I hold ESC and power-on (to enter BIOS), I get the same results with no display.
- However, when I hold F12 and power-on (to enter BIOS flash update mode), the LCD initializes/lights fully and displays the text message for that mode with no problem (no dead pixels, woohoo :))! Thus the LCD is not the issue and there is obviously some measure of functional logic on the motherboard. I have not yet tried flashing the BIOS since I don't have the floppy drive yet.
- All behavior is the same whether the battery is installed or not.

I've checked the service manual and the relevant Toshiba Support article already... here are my current questions:

- Farfetched as it seems, does a Libretto with no disk installed fail to display anything at power-on? UPDATE: THE ANSWER IS YES! For shits n giggles I threw in a 2.5in disk with no bracket, and the system gave a POST beep, followed by an F1 prompt to enter BIOS due to cleared CMOS! Hooray! :D:beer::thumbsup:
