Toshiba laptop media buttons

On my Toshiba laptop there are media buttons (play/pause, stop etc) but they don't do anything. None of the Toshiba apps make mention of them. How do I activate them and can they be used to control apps like Winamp without having to select it every time? tia
 
You'd think so, but I haven't a clue which one (aside from the few I know for certain are wrong). I'm not really keen on installing and uninstalling apps that don't do what I want as you could imagine. 🙂
