Toshiba/Hitachi 3Tb drives

Like cruzinforit, I have 2 x Toshiba 3TB in my server as well. One was shucked from a good deal on an external USB 3.0 about 18 months ago and the other was purchased in January. Weirdly enough, the external reports as 5940rpm and has an average transfer speed of 96MB/s and the newer one is 7200rpm but only reports as 93MB/s according to HD Tune. I can attest that they are definitely nowhere near as fast as the 2TB Seagates that I have had in there for the last 3 years; 145-148MB/s according to HD Tune but they are obviously faster in real world tests, too. If it weren't for durability concerns/reputation I would be filling my server with those.

my 5TB toshiba gets ~215MB/s hdparm results
I had two different seagate 3TB drives, one got 205 consistently the other was around 189

225MB/s? I would love a link for that and if it's true, I will picking one up for a 2nd parity drive.

I have other process going on so my computer is never idle so that might affect the speeds a bit. But those are working off the SSD and are more CPU intensive. Still can give you an idea..

+1 for Toshiba. I have 8x3TB in my ZFS on Linux file server. Excellent value and great performance. I always buy retail packs to make sure that the drives are packed safely.

Excellent, looks like they are about 20MB/s faster than the Seagates I have been using.

Should I get a Toshiba or Hitachi 3Tb drive for my main pc drive? Are there any issues with Toshiba?
Same difference. Toshiba bought HGST's 3.5" manufacturing / tech, and the <= 3TB 3.5"s are rebadges (eg. the DT01ACA300 in my sig, which is a rebadged 7K3000)

The 2TB and 3TB seagates use 2watts less power and 10-15% slower across the board.... But in access time the seagates are 14ms and 15ms while the Toshiba is 11ms.. so even with 5 platters compared to 2 or 3, it is still much faster.. Compared to the seagate greens with their 17ms access times, this one is noticeably faster is every way. I am surprised with that, the more platters the slower it usually is..
