Toshiba HDD's?

Are Toshiba HDD's as reliable as other branded HDD's (Western Digital for example)? Someone has a 40GB for sale cheap (with supposedly a weeks use) and I need one for an older PC I still use. They seem to be made by Fujitsu and Wikipedia mentions a lawsuit Fujitsu lost about faulty drives. Was that only certain models?

Used HDs are really not worth it.
No warranty, and you never know what the former owner did with it.

HDs are pretty cheap now, so just buy a new one, and save your headaches for something else. 🙂

I've never seen any Toshibas except as failed laptop drives. Several years ago they seemed to have a minor failure epidemic in their consumer laptop series.

I have no idea if they are good or bad today.

As Elixer notes, I have a no-buy rule about anything used that spins.

Toshiba bought Fujitsu's troubled HD business last year, and I believe production of Fujitsu's consumer level HDs has been discontinued because of this. Model numbers starting with "MK" are for Toshiba designs. I've owned only 4 Toshiba drives: 2 floppies, a 160GB 2.5", and a 100MB 5.25" x 3" H.
