Toshiba HDD utility?

I have a user at my office with a Toshiba Tecra 9100 laptop including a 40GB Toshiba drive (MK4019GAX). He's getting BSODs, but I'm never around when they happen. I want to run a diagnostic utility on his hard drive (to rule out hardware fault) but Toshiba doesn't put theirs out on the web it seems. They say it's on the recovery CDs but I tried running that and it wanted to wipe and reinstall so I backed out of that. What can I use to determine whether his hard drive is okay or not?
