Tigerdirect.ca sent me an email saying that they're selling the HD-A3 player for $130 out the door, and you get the two included movies, plus the extra 5 from the mail-in offer. Everywhere else is selling it for $299 still. This has gotta be a joke right, or are they just jumping ship before everybody else is? Just as an upconverting player that's not a bad deal, I'm tempted to pull the trigger just for the movies and to replace my aging Phillips DVP642.

130 + shipping for 7 movies to the player is a great deal imo.

Lots of rumors going around about Blu Ray this HD DVD that... but if HD DVD does fail you'll have a nice up converting unit.

I own the A2 :)

HD DVD is near dead, I wouldn't bother buying one right now.

Since Warner adopted BR, and HBO jumped on the bandwagon, seems like the end game is at hand.

Not trying to start a flame war, but seems like it's a done deal...

They're dumping their stock while they can. I bought one about a month ago and it's a great unit. The upconverting on normal DVDs works very well.

I got an HDDVD unit for $94.

If BluRay does end up winning out, I guess I'll just have both types. Since some movies were released only in HDDVD format I guess that's okay.

Wow didn't know about HBO. It sounds like everyone is going to follow suit.

If you can get one for $150 or less I say go for it. Just think of it as an upconverting player that can also play HD DVDs. HD DVDs will continue to get cheaper and cheaper in the coming months so you should be able to pick up several movies for the cost of a DVD. I'd say it's worth it, especially if you can't afford to buy a PS3 (the only profile 2.0 compatible device out yet).

Yeah I'm getting a PS3 this year anyway, so I knew I'd have the ability to play both formats.

If HD-DVD dies - imagine the blowout sales on them. That would be cool.

I would expect those same movies to be relased in BD later on.

Yeah, but it could be months, or years before they are re-released on BD.

Once PS3 comes out in a new form factor, I'm getting one.

I can't wait to have LOTR and Band of Brothers on BR

I wouldn't recommend dumping any money into a dying format. Just wait until Blu-Ray players drop in price some more and pick up one of those.

The A3 is $133 on Amazon now too ... I bought an A30 in December & was thinking about returning it since the Warner announcement but then I got Amazon to price-match it & now I actually paid less for it then I would have for the Oppo SD player I almost bought instead so theres no reason to bail out. (I already have a Sharp BD player too)

I think it really comes down to how much time you want to wait. I don't think you'll see BRD players drop down to 150 for QUITE some time (a year or more perhaps), so if you want to watch HD content now, picking up a cheap HD-DVD player might not be a bad move considering it's also an upconverting DVD player. I picked up the A3 a few months ago with one of the 10 free HD-DVDs deal and I've been picking up HD-DVDs since then. I STILL plan on picking up some HD-DVDs in the future as they go on clearance. The quality is no worse than BRD, and it's not like HD-DVD players (dual format maybe) won't exist in the next few years. Dual format players will be here to stay so as to not alienate the sector of the market that early adopted HD-DVD. I'm not waiting another year for BRD players to come down in price so I can watch more HD content. I guess it's really up to you to decide what the payoff versus price is for a format which will indeed probably go by the wayside over the next year or so.

I purchased a pair of HD-A2's during the walmart sale a while back (for $100 each). Even if HD-DVD dies, I'm plenty happy with my purchase. I will continue buying HD-DVD media (and partake in some of the firesales if they do die). For that price, you still get a solid up-converting DVD player, and there are still HD-DVD exclusive titles out there. Furthermore, even after BR wins and HD-DVD dies, there will likely be a decent lag period before former HD-DVD exclusive movies are put out on BR. In any case... a PS3 + an inexpensive HD-DVD player is a good way to cover all of your bases. I wouldn't go dropping $700 on an HD-DVD player, but $130 is a very decent price.

Really a good point. Sure HD-DVD will die a slow miserable death. But it wont happen overnight and BluRay players wont be comparable in pricing for quite some time. Ill honestly be surprised if anybody can pickup a 1.1 player for $149 or less by next Christmas.

And when the format does die, the player will keep playing the movies you have purchased.

Just saw that Sams has the HD-DVD player for $128 and someone said costco has it for the same price. Comes with 2 movies and 5 more by mail. I guess this is there last swing to keep the studios they have from leaving. Heck at $128 thats a good price for a upconvertiung DVD player that plays some HD movies. I also think it comes with a HDMI cable.

So how will this help? Think warner would change back if HD-DVD players started selling 3-1 over Blu-ray?
