Get this player for Standard DVD upconversion. The HD DVD playback is just a bonus! This player rocks. I got over the initial startup time after about 2movies. The PQ is amazing.

My most annoying problem with this player is that if I do not completely finish a movie, and wind up turning off my TV and doing something else for a little while, the player goes into "HDMI Error" mode and requires a complete power cycle to reboot and then you have to find your way to where you stopped. I am not used to this behavior and it's majorly annoying. I'm not sure if this is a firmware bug or an HDMI 'feature' as part of the standard. It does these even on non-HD movies and shows.

The upconversion is very good.
The starting from the beggining of the player when the player is stopped is an encoding problem with the earlier disks, supposedly this will be fixed on future releases of the movies themselves. When i switch signals, i get the hdmi error too, but does not require a full restart. It is annoying to have to find yer place again, though.

Can you explain? Does it recover automatically? Maybe I'm being impatient? Does it take 41 seconds? Are you hitting pLAY?

I am excited to receive my HD-A1, but I wanted to see some more feedback from you guys. I am coming from an Oppo 971H so I am not sure what to expect, however my expectations are very high. I did not like the Oppo's black levels or the audio-sync issues.

How long have you been waiting and did they bill your credit card?

I ordered on the 9th. All they've done at this point is deducted my 100 miles, and pre-authed my credit card. They haven't billed it yet.

The a1 replaced my oppo as well. The consensus is that it upsamples as well if not better.
The wife played mrs henderson (sd) through it and it looked fine.

Ya i hit play and it comes back up, takes a little while. It does start from the begining/menu but i dont have to press power and power on again. Also I have not done a full hard reset since i got the player (pull plug).
What display device are you using?

FW 2.0 was released earlier this week unofficially. This added true hd in 5.1 as well as fix a few problems with color space issues over dvi.

The pc architecture which accounts for the slow start times, will aid in the release of new features since they can be flashed with new software as needed.

Watched Aeon Flux last night, crappy movies have never looked so good!!

Prison Break Season 1 looks PHENOMENAL on this player, I took it to my neighbor's condo and it does not look as good on her admittedly crappy DVD player from Wal Mart but it just goes to show there's magic in this Toshiba box.

Oh and I get "HDMI error" on this brand new DVD if I turn my TV off when I pause in the middle of an ep. I think it's a firmware issue personally. Annoying.

apparantly there is a new firmware release out there if your player only outputs to a 2.1 system, the firmare allows a 5.1 output. The newer players already have the firmware installed however. My friend has this player and he just went through this. I will probably pick one up in Oct when I go to Oregon, no tax.

FirmWare 2.0 is now out.

Includes:
TrueHD 5.1
720P PQ fix
Better Error Recovery (less skipping/audio sync issues)
HDMI/DVI error fixes

TrueHD 5.1 on Traninig Day makes a big difference, for those wondering. :)

What if your receiver doesn't have TrueHD formats available? Will it still make a difference on Pro Logic IIx or DD EX?

The HD portion is just for the video so as the the receiver all it is using is just audio...My friend has a crappy receiver right now and its fine but he is planning on upgrading to 5 speakers now this this feature enabled. As for me, I have the Pioneer Elite receiver and when I get this unit all I am concerned is about the pic quality as the TV has HDMI inputs as well as the HD player so that issue is covered. There is no need to get a HDMI receiver unless you are buying all these components given that you have no devices.

All the advanced codecs are decoded within the player. No receiver out can decode DD+ or TrueHD at this moment. Say you're connected via HDMI. Goto Setup and change the audio output under HDMI to "PCM." The player will do all the work and send it out via PCM to the receiver which simply forwards it onto the speakers.
