WIth this players compatability with Tivo series 2 and Win XP MCE, I really may phase out my iPod for one, but to my question in the subtitle, does DirecTV still use Tivo DVR's, and if not, if I bought one seperatly, will it work with all my channels.

If you want this primarily for video, you ought to check out the Creative Zen Vision W. I think it's also compatible with TiVo (came with some card in the box talking about TiVo), and it has a better screen.

It turns out the new DirecTV HD DVR is not a Tivo unit, and even the old DirecTivo's were not compatible with the Tivo2go service.

So I'll still need to transcode avi's and other video formats. Can WMP 10/11 do this (like can I add my avi's to the library, and then select a nuch and just hit like convert to WMV? after configuring apropriate encoding settings)?

I have no idea, but remember that these devices are designed to be used with noobs... my Creative Zen Vision W came with software that'll transcode it for you. It's not infinitely configurable like some more poweruser-oriented software, but it does the job.

Alright. My iPod video came with zilch. After trying Videora and another program, I coughed up the money for the nero digital license, and use Vision Express (which is not very configurable). So I'd be somewhat ahead already.
