Hi guys... having a rather strange problem that I can't quite figure out.

A little while ago I upgraded my system, and everything worked perfectly. I've got my Toshiba DVD drive daisy chained with my Mitsumi CDRW, and they've both been working properly. A little while ago I noticed that DMA wasn't enabled on either, so I went ahead and enabled DMA only on the Toshiba DVD drive, as I've heard it increases performance. Now, I restarted, and windows didn't detect EITHER cd drive. I tried running in safe mode, and they worked perfectly - detected and everything. Bios also detects them. Please help me out here.. Rather at a loss at how to disable DMA (no option for it under the properties in Safe Mode).

Thanks!

would help to know what motherboard your running. If you have the option, turn off UDMA on the ide channels your cdrom's are connected too.

go into the bios and set UDMA from [auto] to [disabled] on the ide channel your cdroms are on.

I love you guys. Thanks. Well, everything works now - but it begs the question.. Why did this happen? And even though DVDs seem to run fine, why can't I turn DMA on? Its a two year old Toshiba DVD SDM 1212

You can now go into device manager and check DMA for the Toshiba. it will work fine.
