Friends notebook seems to be toast... drive gets stuck on formatting, is there any free tool i can use in dos to scan the disk and block out the bad sectors.. used to use spinrite but dont wanna pay for it if there is a free one..

PC is HP, I check HP & Toshiba site, no drive diagnostic were found..

If anyone know something.. thanks. I downloaded Hitachi drive fitness but haven't run it yet..

Man I've had 3 OEM Toshiba drives die on me. Try GWSCAN. Its a Gateway utility that you can boot to and is built for Gateway by Western Digital. I've used it multiple times on a few different systems and its pretty acurate.
 
Most likely you have a Hitachi or Toshiba hdd. Try the tool from hitachi's website if you are lucky enough as Toshiba does not have any drive tool.
