Toshiba does 9 platters to make the first 14TB non-SMR HD

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation today announced the launch of the MG07ACA Series, the world's first enterprise 14TB Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDD. Using a 9-disk, helium-sealed design, the new MG07ACA Series provides the power-efficient capacity and storage density needed by cloud-scale and enterprise storage solution providers to achieve their TCO objectives.

That is rather impressive.
Now, we have to wait to see how reliable these things are...

I wonder what capacity PMR platters this one uses? 1.8TB? (That would actually give 16.2TB though) 1.5TB would yield only 13.5TB.

Nice, some really advanced tech in there. Looks like there's still competition in the HDD business.

Roughly 1.56TB. With 260MB/sec they must have the highest areal density currently available on 3.5".

But sometimes with other drives they short-stroke and/or leave one platter side blank to get the more odd sizes.

With 18 heads now possible on a hard drive, I wonder if we begin to see this happen.

It would amazing to see a 3.5" HDD saturate x2 wide port SAS 24Gbps.

Y'all wild, Toshiba. That's way more eggs than I'd ever put in one basket.
The market for these things are not meant to be bought 1 at a time... more like 50+ units, and they will have redundant backups.

this is enterpise oriented. where they want density to maximize usage of racks, reducing square footage, and bringing down hvac and electrical costs.

edit: for example....I serviced a high end storage box which held 60 2TB 72k rpm drives per 4U chassis in a rack. The storage total was 10 shelves, software raid 6 IIRC.

a more recent example: 84 10TB 72k rpm drives in a 5U chassis. dont know the final shelf count as its not fully assembled yet, but 840TB in a 5U 19in chassis. three racks total, so many PB's in this newer setup.

edit: 5U chassis, not 4U

14TB will take some time to vette, but will add more density.
