The hybrid discs are manufactured using existing technologies and production lines, according to Shiroharu Kawasaki, president and chief executive of Memory-Tech. Each disc uses a 0.6-mm thick dual-layer disc plus a 0.6-mm thick single-layer disc to create the hybrid, with each layer storing 15 gigabytes..

Toshiba and its HD DVD disc are locked into a format war between it and Blu-Ray, led by Sony Corp. Both sides are in discussions to try and hammer out a compromise standard for the next generation of discs, although some reports have said that the balance is shifting in favor of Blu-Ray.

This battle won't be decided until the porn industry picks a format.

that sucks. for an hd movie we will have a minimum of one layer change...and unless you have a player that can do layer changes so fast that you don't notice it, then I'm gonna have a problem. I still have a problem with my current dvd player and it's fast, but not seamless layer change (Panasonic s-97)

ah hem... i am sure you meant the movie industry right?

:) :) :)

Yeaaah. Surrre. That's the ticket.

No, seriously. Once the porn industry picks a format it will take off. Unless of course Toshiba and the other HD-DVD supporters compromise with Sony and the Blu-Ray supporters first.

I like HD-DVDs compatability with existing DVDs though. Last I read, Blu-Ray players couldn't play existing DVDs.

I really don't see how HD-DVD has any advantages over Blu-ray.

...they can make them on similar mfgr.infrastructure rather then completly re tool for blu-ray.

Supposedly cheaper to manufacture and compatible with current DVDs.

You know I don't think they'll have much pull in this fight. I don't think there's much demand for HD adult movies, or say...maybe 20 hour features on a single disk. I'll grant you the adult indrusty single handedly drove the advancement of streaming video on the web but I don't think they sell enough disks to win a format war. But I could be wrong, I don't know how many disk they sell, and I'm sure there's one guy with a collections of thousands of adult disks and a and hand full of people like that is > a normal guy with a couple movies.
