Anyone own one of the new s705's that came out June 3? If so, can you post what you think about it, and if you would recommend it...

Thanks!
Andrew

CNET hasn't posted their review yet, but according to this page, they have 20 user reviews already, but i can not find any way to view the user comments, any help?

All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!

I stopped at compUSA today and looked at this laptop. That screen is the best I have ever seen, so bright and real looking

I hope compusa has a nice july 4 deal on it... if so, i will own one 🙂

if not, ill buy it sometime later this month... i cant waitttttttt 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I didn't see it in the 4th of July flyer. I just love that screen, I heard the TV tuner quality sucks, and I'm not happy with my AIW quality, so I would prolly not like the quality of this. I wish i could trade out the TV tuner for a wide aspect display, that would be sweet.

Well the one I looked at was only hooked up to an antenna(no cable) and from what i could tell it picked up only 1 channel and its was horrible quality, but I think that was partly because of the antenna, cause if I held it, it came in a little better. I can't comment on how it looks with a cable connection, but from the user reviews on Cnet they seem to dislike the quality of the tuner. I mean don't expect it to look as good as a standard TV, thats just not gonna happen. But they seem to critisize it more.

For OTA, it is all about your antennae, not your tuner. I wouldn't consider the tv tuner a selling point for somebody without cable/dish or *exceedingly* good reception of OTA where they already are.

If you want a portable tv, there are much cheaper alternatives. 🙂 I've got an extra battery taking up that bay anyways.

Yeah i know that, and like i said, I can't personally comment on the cable reception with this tuner, but it does seem like at leasy a few from Cnet complained about it, and I somehow doubt it would be all that great, I mean this has to be the first time one was made for a laptop, right? Does anyone know who made it?

After reading that cnet review, i'm a little pissed off at how stupid people can be. Why are about half of those reviews for this laptop of people who do not even own it??

I don't care what bob smith read about it.. thats not a review... i can read about it too...

A review should be from an owner of the laptop... blah, im done with my complaining...

Thats true, take it for what its worth. I think I am holding off for a little while, with the new HP and compaqs coming out, and the mobility 9600, I think it will be a good time for nice laptops.

it tunes fine with cable. I see no appreciable difference between going from cable box to tv or cable box-->laptop-->tv. Well, it looks a bit better going through the laptop, since I'm hooked up to a plasma that accepts direct pc output from vidcard.

I can't see buying this laptop specifically because of the tuner and mediacenter edition, unless you live in a closet and really need to save some space. 🙂

Do you mean you see no differance in the quality on your plasma? I think they were talking about TV quality on the laptop.

Found this review off another site... Hope it helps everyone

Size:
The size isn't an issue for me, my old school inspiron was a bit bigger I believe, the toshiba is a bit heavier but who cares?

Fans:
I didn't experience any of the fan noise people have complained about, as a matter of fact it was very quiet but let's keep in mind, this is a desktop processor.. it's going to get hot, so if fans have to kick on to keep it cool.. that's fine with me.

Battery life:
Not that great, but again .. this is a powerhouse machine with a desktop p4 and a beefy graphics card, not to mention that sound system.. the battery life is on par with what I'd expect with the type of system this is. Don't forget you can tweak the power settings to run it at 1.2ghz, you will extend your battery life this way and it still plays medal of honor at highest resolution/detail settings nicely.

Display:
What can I say about that display? it's impressive! super sharp, not as bright as my dell flat screen I have on my desktop, but much sharper! excellent graphics for gaming, though I only tried 2 titles so far.

Sound system:
I had 2 friends over and when I played an mp3 they were blown away, the sound system is superb! the best I have *ever* heard on a laptop system.

Windows media center:
I was very impressed with this part of the OS, I was able to use it just like a tivo system, pause live TV, replay, record.. even with just 40 gigs free, it had 15 hours of record time on high quality.. I plan to use this feature often! one of my friends owns a tivo and he was impressed.

I won't be able to play with wireless until I get my access point today, but all in all I'm very impressed with the system! for those talking down about it because of battery life and fans.. etc.. let's not forget what this machine was made for..

1. Gaming (let's be honest.. )
2. Media/PVR
3. DESKTOP REPLACEMENT

It's mobile enough for what it does, if you want mobility to the point that you can use it for 7 or 8 hours straight without an outlet, get something else.. this is not for you 🙂

I was looking for this Notebook on Toshiba's web site today and couldn't find it anywhere. Did some searching and found this. Looks like it's been discontinued already. A new model should be out soon. Interesting.
