MassMerchandise.com has the Toshiba 3109 DVD player for $149.95 plus shipping. I think this is a discontinued model since it isn't on Tohsiba's site. But the next best price I found using two different search engines was $229. I didn't see any indication that it is refurbished so it should be new. I seem to recall that this was a well-regarded DVD player about a year ago.

I happen to own this particular DVD player and I can't say enough good things about it. When I picked mine up about a year ago, these were retailing for $399. This DVD player is IDENTICAL to toshiba's new SD-2200 model, so you can price match amongst those and compare. $149.95 is a HOT deal on this DVD player. It has dual disc system, optical and coax audio out, colorstream and rca video out as well as s-video.

Toshiba is also the most reliable of the brands I've used. The picture reproduction, audio decoder (this model has a built in dolby digital decoder for dolby digital-READY receivers) and is a GREAT player especially for $149. Do yourself a favor and pick this up.

If only this player read CDR/CDRW, I'd jump on it immediately.

Still, it's an incredible deal for someone not interested in that particular feature.

Atrac,

that is one of the downfalls of this player, that it doesn't read those types of discs. If you want something similarly priced, the Philips Magnavox DVD players all seem to support cd-r/cd-rw playback and should suit your needs well. They are among the same price range, and reliability is nearly as good, but I have to go with the Toshiba on overall reliability and performance. For the price, you can't beat the Philips Magnavox though, on offering cd-r/rw compatibility

The dual disc system is exactly what it implies. The player can hold 2 discs at once. Obviously it can only play one disc at a time. You can load and unload from the unused tray while a disc plays. The one anoying thing about the tray system is that it auto loads whatever disc is in the system. IE. You have 2 discs in the player and you want to change what's in tray 1. You open tray 1 to put in a new movie. Meanwhile the player loads what is in tray 2 and starts playing it. So now, once you have inserted your new movie into tray 1, you must hit the disc change button to have it swap disc 2 for disc 1. (I'm sure this is very confusing to anyone who has never seen this unit.)

The remote doesn't suck but it's not all that good either. The first thing I did when I got the player was to program the Toshiba remote into my Stereo Remote.

Let me close by saying that I am very very happy with this unit. I do wish it could read CDR and CDRW discs but its not that big a deal. I have a 5-disc CD changer that does. I paid $379 for it a little over a year ago. So $149 is a steal.

Hope all this makes a little sense.

Unbelievable. And I just placed my order for the Panasonic DVD-RV30 at Amazon last night. I'm really, really pissed--$20 more for dual trays and DD, and no rebate hassle. How on Earth do I get Amazon to take it back without me having to pay return shipping? :|

Is this a new, factory-sealed unit? How reliable is Mass Merchandise?

>>FYI. ship standard to CA is $17.45 How did you get free shipping? <<

Sorry, I was wrong about the free shipping. If you go to their home page, at the top it says free shipping for gift store purchases between now and December 25. I didn't pick up on the "gift store" part - now that I look closer, the "gift store" is one of their departments. The department that has the DVD players isn't offering free shipping.

I just noticed that toward the end of the following thread from this forum there is some discussion that seems to raise some concern about this merchant. I don't know if there is real reason to be concerned but you may want to check the thread before ordering.

As I had stated in the other thread, I ordered an HP Digital Camera from them and received it without a problem. This was about a month and a half ago. Maybe they learned their lesson and have improved?

To my knowledge, this unit was one of the first DVD players (at a reasonable price) to even offer a multiple Disc DVD player.

The dual tray system acts very much like a 5 disk carousel changer but instead of some kind of spinning mechanism for the discs it is a single width drawer that has two trays stacked one on top of the other.

The Mechanics are:
(There are two eject Buttons (Eject 1 and Eject 2).
Push Eject 1: Drawer opens, single tray showing the number 1.

Push Eject 2 while tray is opened from last step: Drawer closes and loads disc 1, then reopens, still appears to be a single tray but there is a number 2 on this tray. Disc 1 starts playing.

Push Eject 1 while tray is opened from last step: Drawer closes and then opens again with Disc 1 in tray. Tray now noted with a 1. Meanwhile disc 2 loads and starts playing.

I will say that I prefer the carousel versions as long as the carousel can be opened while a disc is playing. However, How often will you really sit down and watch more than 2 movies in a row.

Good DVD player, hopefully you get the more recent firmware version and hopefully it never breaks during the warranty period. Trust me you don't want to deal with Norms electronics, the Toshiba repair center. I could write a 4 page story on the problems I've had getting my 3109 upgraded. It is a good deal for this much money if its new.:|

Thanks for the lead.

I've had the 2200 for a few months now and it rocks. I play my cd's on my sony 300 disc carousel, where they were meant to be.

I also got in this deal. After I emailed them twice, I finally received a tracking number. It is scheduled for delivery this Friday. I'll give them credit shipping them right away--ordered last Friday and they left the package with UPS on Sunday. I just wish that UPS was a little faster on their delivery. But for $167.45, I am not complaining! BTW TR6, did you receive a coupon for 9 free DVD rentals at Hollywood Video?...Toshiba's website stated that this would be included with every Toshiba DVD purchase, expiration date of 12/31/01.
