This i would like to know also... I'm guessing the X's on the DVD dont really matter too much since you're only gonna be playing a DVD movie at 1X, but if you've got DVD Data discs, that could make a difference. Whats the kb/s for a 1X DVD... I know a 1X CDrom is 150kb/s

If 1x for dvd is like 6-8 times for cd then that 4x more would be like a 24-32x gain on a cdrom (theoretically). The higher speed allows for smoother fast forward and rewind searching (though I'm not sure at what speed this becomes less significant). Also if you're into ripping movies the speed may be nice. The 16x appears to have 48x cd speed along with faster DAE. When software starts to come out on DVD, the speed will be nice also. We should be approaching Hard Drive speeds soon.

from what I've read on the DAE's, the Toshiba aren't great at DAE to begin with, so 12x and 16x isn't really going to make a huge difference. The DVD ripping part might start playing a role.

Does anybody know how much louder the 16x is compared to the 12x? And please tell me it's not as loud as the Pioneer 16x :p
