AccessMicro has DVD drives Link! on the cheap as well. The Pioneer 16X Tray OEM is $82 while the Toshiba 16X OEM is $78. I'm sure one could find similar deals as well on pricewatch.

What about drives with a decoder card? Is the card worth it with a faster computer, or should I just use the software renderer? Any deals on sep. cards, and what do you guys resommend?

Well, many decoder cards require a passthrough from the vidcard (actually, I haven't heard of any that don't)... this usually means some degradation in image quality just because of the passthrough. Even though software decoders are "slower", a computer with enough horsepower (400MHz P2 equiv?) should be able to run a DVD at full quality in software just fine. I personally don't think its worth it, especially with the price of CPUs versus the price of a decoder card.
Also, some people have complained that the passthrough causes blurriness on the desktop in higher rez. So if you gots a big monitor with hi-rez... I recommend staying away from decoder card.

I have the Pioneer SLOT 10x DVD and love it. No more cheap, flimsy trays!

I can't stand the Pioneer 12x slot. It makes way too much noise. It performs nicely but it sounds like a jet engine when it spins up. Just my 2p worth.

TSDible, if you look at this thread in storagereview.com, you'll read about a curious problem that the Pioneer 16x's have. My A105S does the same thing, peaks at around 20x approximately 30 min. in, then drops sharply back to just over 12x. I've never noticed it causing any problem in copying, though.

i can visually see the differance between the slot drive...but can any tell me the advantages and disadvatages of slot and a regular...the only thing i can think of is that slot drives can get dirty easier(the cover) :Þ

For Pioneer models at least, they chose for some odd reason to put digital audio output only on the slot-loading models, so if you want a digital audio connector and you're choosing Pioneer, you don't want the tray.

I have a Pioneer 10x Slot loading. I agree with an earlier post that it is way too noisy. The slot load feature is very sweet. I just wish I could get the best of both worlds. Does anybody know anything about the AOPEN slot load model? What's the noise level for that drive as compared to the Pioneer/HiVal?

Just received my Aopen and it is a lot quieter than my previously owned Pioneer 10X...whistling gone but still has spin up noise...overall I'm pleased with it.
