The better deal is the cheapest. By the time you start needing a DVD drive for anything but movies, there will be much better and cheaper ones available. You can play DVD movies on a 2x DVDrom.

I just got a slot-loading Pioneer 16x DVD for $86 from www.goroyalpc.com. Slot loading is nice for lazy guys like me.

I was wondering about that. With all these new dvd players comming 12 16x and so on, WHAT else do companies make in dvd format that takes advantage of the 12 or 16 speed?

You know... I can't seem to find that Panasonic drive on the Panasonic website Is this the wrong site or the wrong info on the drive

The Pioneer has some mechanical problems and isn't that great at reading subchannel data.
Its also loud and it even gets hot while spinning up. My pick is the Toshiba.
