Torrents kill my modem

So I have Comcast. My connection easily does 7Mbps. However if a torrent hits 100KB/sec it will peak then slowly come down to 0, then I have no connection to the net. I have to unplug to get it back.

I do have a router which I use all the time. However I have tried plugging directly into the modem and I get the same thing.

Any idea? Do I just have a bum modem?

I have the same exact problem. I have Comcast also.

It also sometimes happens when I'm downloading a large file (around 300 meg).
It will get half way through and then die. It especially happens on torrents though. Have to reset the CM to get the connection back.

I had Comcast when I lived at my grandparents house but had no router and never experienced the problem with torrents but happens all the time where I am now.

I am also using a router right now (Netgear) so maybe it does have something to do with the router? If I have time this weekend I will try directly connnecting a computer to the modem and see.

I also have Comcast, but never had a problem with torrents, but I experienced this same problem when trying to play CS Source through Steam. Everytime the game would be trying to connect to a server the modem would drop entirely and I would have to quit steam and powercycle the modem. I am using a linksys router, and eventually the problem went away on its own without me doing anything, hopefully that is the case with your problems.

What brand modem do you have? A long time ago I had an RCA modem that would always crash under remotely hard traffic. Later I got a Linksys modem which worked fine at first but would crash in minutes if some fast browsing is introduced. I replaced the modem 5 times and each time in was the same. Basically Motorola is the only modem that has not given me these problems.

Torrents generate make many connections and kill weak modems.
Replace the modem, and them put it through a torture test with several torrents and fast browsing of multiple cites simultaneously. If the modem crashes then it is no good.

anyone have a netgear modem?

just read a thread in the dvdtalk tech forum where people with a netgear router have problems when on p2p or loading images
