I have Vista Home Premium , Zone Alarm free Firewall and NOD32 AV , with a high speed DSL line . Regular download speed is excellent . When I do a torrents download with Free Download Manager , and also MicroTorrent the download speed is terrible . Best I can ever get is 25 kB/s and average about 9kB/s . I've tried turning off Zone Alarm , NOD32 - doesn't help . Even with these speeds , often my requests to connect are terminated by the other side . Maximum time I can ever get is say 3 hours for a connection .
Any suggestions anyone , please ?

Thanks tomt4535 . I have a modem from the phone company which is also a router - a Siemens C2-010 . Do I need to do something there ? Though I have no info on how to access it .

Might want to check with others that use that router to see if it has problems with torrents.
Lots of the cheaper routers and even some of the quality ones have problems handling all the connections that torrents can bring.

Try using a diferrent torrent client, such as Vuze (formerly Azureus). Properly set up, and with properly-executed port-forwarding, you should be able to maximise your download speeds for your broadband connection. The Azureus wiki has lots of very good advice on maximising up/download speeds.
