Shortly before a rented van ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians in Toronto, killing 10 and wounding 14 others, a short and cryptic message was posted on the Facebook account of Alek Minassian, the man accused of carrying out the attack.

The post referred to another mass killer – Elliot Rodger, who shot dead six people and wounded 13 others in Isla Vista, California, in 2014 – and said that the “incel rebellion has already begun. We will overthrow all the Chads and the Stacys”.

Minassian’s Facebook account has since been deleted and police have yet to suggest a motive for the attack, but the post appeared to connect the alleged killer with the so-called “incel” movement, which has made collective sexual frustration the basis for a deeply misogynistic online subculture.

It's a doomed endeavor to speculate prematurely and needlessly, but I do find it a little odd that if his was an "Elliot Rodgers" style rampage, that he appeared to have picked targets entirely at random. To me that actually edges it slightly more towards 'mental health' than a political motivation.

(Though I kind of think that's a continuum rather than a binary thing - even people with real mental health problems are going to be influenced in their actions and choice of targets by wider socio-politial trends, e.g. how people obsessed with conspiracies, who might be genuinely ill, so often seem to pick 'the Jews' as the ultimate conspirators rather than, say, Peruvians or Canadians).

I guess gamersgaters never really gave up, and at least one of them and likely more are now moving on to murder?

You have to be mentally ill to join such a group.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think psycho politics are just that one part of Cluster B we haven't properly described yet... or it's a grab bag of the existing stuff.

On the flip side, I do remember reading recently that a large chunk of these domestic terrorists don't have any clinical disorder. They're just really shitty people. Which kind of makes sense. A few seem genuinely nuts (like the Unabomber and the naked shooter) but an awful lot more are just butthurt white boys mad at the world because life is hard/can't get a girl/jerbs/OMG BASTION IMBA.

Not to risk derailing a so far reasonable discussion, but this does put some wind in the sails of gun control. These dudes don't have underworld connections or lots of money. They're just pissy not-too-bright self-pitying rejects that get hold of daddy's guns and go on a shooting spree because it's easier than learning not to be a wart on society's ass. And if we could cut down the number of guns in civilian hands, we could also take some guns and especially some military hardware away from the cops. Right now we've got a civvies vs cops/govt arms race that's not helping anyone except gun companies selling to both sides. If only elite criminals have military-style guns, you can leave them to SWAT and the FBI and beat cops can stick to tasers/nightsticks/MMA.

Edit: yeah I know this thread was about a car attack. Doesn't change the overall calculus of risk reduction.

Weren't you just asking what an incel was? Now you are associating it with gamergate? Gamergate was about fairness in journalism. Most gamers I know get hella laid.

I don't think we should relitigate that debate here.

And I do see a connection between the two, like it or not. Both share that same insular boy's club mindset. Both feel entitled to women as objects of sexual gratification. And of course, both threaten violence when they don't get their way.

Oh of course, It was about fairness in "journalism." How silly of me to forget.

I thought GamerGate was all about sending death threats and rape threats to feminists (Anita Sarkeesian) that try to make critiques about video games.

I don't even like Anita, but holy hell, those retards screwed up hard in dealing with such people.

GG is about fairness the way cannibalism is about sharing. Anyone who hasn't figured that out is... not reading the news, to be as charitable as possible. And yeah, they're precisely the same human wastelands that join incel groups and think swatting is hilarious and occasionally decide it's not enough. If there's a unifying thread here it's losers trying to punish society for their loser status.

I don’t know about you but when Skip Bayless shits out yet another worthless article I immediately fire off an email threatening to rape and kill him. I’m sure the gamergate people do as well because remember it’s totally not about putting women in their place.

My point is that Incel and gamergate may possibly be rectangles and squares so to speak. Incels encompass a much larger amount of people than just lonely video game nerds. Gamergate is not graduating into incel and violence, it is probably just incel evolving into finding potency through violence.

I kind of believe that social fulfillment / sexual fulfillment, make men feel potent, strong, and allows for a balance between perceived and actual identity. Acts of violence probably fulfill that feeling of potency so the most stressed and disturb incels are finding that as a solution.

Nicholas Cruz - likely incel.
This guy - incel

Stephen Paddock - not an incel, but lost his fortune, for which he drew his value as a man from.

It all comes back to male identity crisis.

Both seem to be about a bunch of butthurt males whining about being losers and try to put the blame on others. Put MAGAts in the category too.

Women are kicking men's asses in academics, making huge strides in the workplace, and are acquiring enough power to tell creeps to fuck off, you can't grab my pussy or drop Quaaludes in my drink just because you want to.

So are these "men" rising to the challenge or working harder, sharing and being better humans?

Nope, they decide they need to harass women, threaten, and sometimes kill ppl.

No wonder women don't want to f these crybabies...

Incel is just as much about Chads as it is about Stacys. Please educate yourself on the matter.

No. Those are stupid fucking terms and i know too much about it already. All these losers need to man up or go to prison.

That will end their celebracy problem real quick.
