Torn... X800pro or 6800 NON GT

I was looking at the eVga 6800 card on newegg, it is only $283...but i can pick up a x800pro right now for $333... I am very interested in the 6800, if there is away to unlock the other 4 pipelines, but I am worried about the 128mb ram...But at the same time i can turn an x800pro into an XT (correct me if i am wrong...). But ATI doesn't support dx9.0c or pixel shader 3.0...

So is the x800pro worth the extra $50? I refuse to pay more than 350 for vid card...so the GT is definitly out, unless i can softmod a 6800 non gt... :p

Advice...

Read firingsquad's new review of the PNY 6800GT. they have 6800 vanilla and pro scores included.
I'd actually spring for a GT but I'm not on the market. :(

its in the review. you won't be having extra pipes unless you pick up a VIVO card, which I doubt you'll find for 333.

I was able to sell my 9800 pro for what i paid for it...may is it worth droping back down to the MSI 9800 pro...it is only 196 on newegg... I guess it clocks like an XT, but it is 100 less than the 6800... Thoughts...

I would go for a x800 pro or a 6800 gt, you will get much better all around performance. BTW, why not have your FSB and memory at 200mhz?

Ahh good question... I don't have that ram anymore...I upgraded to a gig of pc2700 Hyperx for only 150, so i figured i should run them in sinc...didn't want to oc it 3200 speeds...but i just don't think hyperx will go that high...

You can unlock the 6800 to 16 pipes, but you are still stuck with the 2.8ns memory.

Maybe the Asus 6800 would be a good deal... it's got the GT memory if the pipes can be unlocked it'd be a GT with all the extra crap asus always gives. Of course it costs more then GTs do...

If price isn't a factor the X800 Pro is the better choice otherwise probably the 6800. Also if doom is godly to you then you'll need the 6800.

The ASUS 6800 is not a good deal. It is over 400.00. You might as well just get a GT for 400.00.
Other than that, if you can get the X800pro for 333.00, that is a great deal and a helluva nice card.

You can unlock the 6800 to 16 pipes, but you are still stuck with the 2.8ns memory.

Both the Galaxy 6800 and the Chaintech AA6800 come with 2.2ns Hynix ram (2.8ns=700/2.2ns=900). They also both have pre-overclocked cores 350+ and nice cooling solutions.

I'd go with either of those if you are looking at a 6800 vanilla.

On the other hand, that X800pro for $333 does seem to be your best value right now (but has anyone actually received theirs yet?). Maybe if you have a nForce motherboard and are into D3/JK/COD (OpenGL's) consider the 6800, I am definitely getting an added boost by pairing my 6800 w/ an NF3.

edit - regarding the last 3 responses, yes it is definitely a no brainer if they both cost the same amount, but even with the Dell deal there's still a $50 price difference to take into consideration.

final edit - I see you have a Shuttle SFF. That rules out the Galaxy6800 (2 slot) and the Chaintech is out of stock at both ZZF and Negg. Also the 6800's generate more heat than an X800 (a factor to consider with an SFF). I'd jump on that X800 deal while it lasts :)

As said above, if you are a Doom3 person, then the 6800 is the way to to, especially if you get one with the faster memory and have a chance of unlocking the extra pipes.

Edit: Consider getting a 6800 from zipzoomfly. You get farcry for free and free second day shipping as well as the ability to step up to a better card from evga within 90 days.

So eVGA wiill honor the step-up if you didn't purchase the card directly from them then?

The step up program really is a great offer as prices often go down after a few months.
