I thought they were both using the G2 stepping?

So for the lowest power consumption rig go with the 4850e, or x2 5000+ (or other x2 proc)?

For the lowest power consumption, a 2000+ (0.9V) is the lowest that I have read about:

Well, one of my HTPC is the ECS 6100SM-M, 4200+ X2 Brisbane core ( 60.00 for both CPU and board at Frys) , 2600XT video card ( 23.00 AR). Very cheap rig that plays HD very well. The card is excellent for HTPC, and does do hardware acceleration, and audio via HDMI. I'm using a stock AMD heatpipe HSF from a 6000+ X2 . Yeah, the heatsink is overkill for sure, but it runs cool. I noticed at idle the fan will often just stop. That's cool running. The card should be ok for low level gaming, I think it compares to the 8600GT in some games, but not others.

Thanks for the replies everybody. It looks like I might have done a bit of overkill on my build then. Final specs are:

Phenom 8400
2 gb DDR2
The Gigabyte board I referenced in OP (780G mATX for $85 on the egg).

$160 shipped.

I will underclock the cpu most likely to drop power use, but being a tri-core it's going to be more power hungry. Oh well. I might drop that into my gaming rig and take my x2 5200+ and use that for the HTPC. I'll figure it out later this week :)

That might not be a bad idea.

Yeah as far as I can tell that chip runs fairly cool, and I can underclock it and still have great performance. I already know it will do HD video with an 8800GTX, but AFAIK it was all being done on the cpu (with VLC player) and not on the gfx card.

Just got confirmation of delivery of the board, so I think I will take my proc/mem from my current system and use that to install windows/etc. Then I will leave that proc in there I think (the 5200+).

The 4850e does 3.2ghz at about 85w with 1.45v and 2ghz with roughly 25w using 1v or you can drop it all the way down to 1ghz with .8v and say hello to sub 10w processing :)
