that's not the point. it's the best ati offers atm, isn't it? why penalize nvidia cause ati can't bring a product to market in a timely fashion?

and if r600 comes out and smokes the 8800, will you penalize ati for having a newer product? i think not.

Are you running XP or Vista right now?

XP Pro right now but I plan on insalling Vista after I get my other gig of RAM.
There are lots of horror stories going around about Nvidia's Vista drivers. I don't have an Nvidia card to test it out myself though.

Wow troll ftl. All hot air and no substance. Links please. I've heard quite the opposite. The newest ATIs are evidence of it-- the card is much better: full 512bit bus for instance but it barely beast the 8800GTS. Besides, Nvidia seems more on top of their driver game than ATI ever has been.

go with the X1950XT, it's considerably faster than the 7950GT...and has far better IQ as well.

8800GTS 320mb > X1950XT 512mb > X1950XT 256mb > 7950GT 512mb > 7950GT 256mb

Put simply & without extraneous nonsense. ;)

What's wrong with an 8800GTS, and then stepping up to GTX when he wants to upgrade? I don't know the in's and out's of the step up program, but that seems to make the most sense here.

I'd definatley go with the GeFarce 7950GT. I have 2 of 'em in SLI mode and they rock!
Also, in fill-rate limited games the 7950GT blows the socks of any X1950XT.

Are you sure about it?? http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=445&card2=467 I see that the X1950XT has a higher pixel fillrate than the 7950GT, but the 7950GT has a higher texture fillrate, pretty hard to find games that are fillrate limited. Even with fillrate intensive settings like Anti Aliasing, the X1950XT has less impact on performance than any GeForce 7 series of card. The X1950XT has a better feature set, better SM3.0 performance, HDR with Anti Aliasing, higher Anisotropic Filtering Quality. 7950GT is a great card, but I would choose rather the X1950XT over it anyday!

7950GT for $149 or go for the 8800GTS 320mb for about $100 more. In between doesn't make as much sense.

OP
I currently use a 17" LCD and run my games at 1280x1024 so until I build my new system at Christmas and upgrade to a 30" this is the highest resolution my new card will ever have to push.
