Torn between pity / anger / worry / disgust

So the annual Biggest Loser bet is on again here at my company.

Of course everyone is talking low fat, no carb, no soda, no alcohol, whole wheat this, whole wheat that, gym membership, blah blah blah.

What kills me is their eating habits prior to the competition starting. I've been trying to help two particular individuals and sometimes feel like I'm the host of a "What Not To Eat" type show.

Having read up on, but not used, all the different diet plans out there (Atkins, Zone, Celeb, South Beach, celery only, etc., etc.), definitely doesn't make me an advocate for any type of diet, but for an entire change in eating and lifestyle.

I understand some people not having will power or discipline, and maybe battling depression, but when other reach out and nothing changes, it's... a mixture of emotions (see thread title).

I have some whoppers (pun intended) to share about the type of eating habits some people have. How they're not dead already is beyond me.

Stories? Feelings? Opinions?

Losing weight is a lifestyle changes - not just a diet or exercise change. Most people are looking for a quick fix - which, unfortunately for humanity, being overweight is in no way, shape and/or form, a quick fix. People don't want to moderate themselves for an entire lifetime, but instead, for 3 months - and then go back to pigging out, and getting depressed when they gain 60lbs after losing 40lbs. I helped a friend lose some weight, he basically stuck to how I ate (I eat moderately low fat, no fast food/fried foods) and would go walk his dog for an hour. He lost like 50-60lbs in 6 months - but then he hit his plateau, so he resorted to the Atkins. Last time I heard, he gained everything back - and he told me that he felt great eating how I do, and the exercise. He should have just started a more intense work out, but he always needed that "crutch" it seems.

It's tough motivating people to get into a healthy lifestyle. I agree that most diets are useless and it's all about adjusting your physical lifestyle along with eating good foods. In the end run it's up to the person in regards to how far/seriously they want to go. There's only so much you can do, and God knows I've tried with many people.

I was battling with weight most of my life, I was skinny as a young kid, fat when I got older and all throughout high school, then on my last year I woke up and started to take care of myself. I started walking/biking/swimming, then I signed up to a gym, I started eating right, and boom I lost a shitload of weight, felt great, and gained some nice muscle mass. I went on like that for 4 years till I got hit by a car while riding my bike, after that I lost my routine and desire and went back into a lazy/un-motivated phase.

It's been a couple of years now since that has happened and I haven't really come out of it yet, but the desire to do so is always there, everyday when I wake up. For me it's lazyness and a lack of motivation, but one of these days Ill come back to the level I was at or higher. I don't need any help either, I've got my diet's and workout routines down pact, in the end run it's all up to me, despite how much people want to convince/help me out.

Most people have poor self control or just go into a style of life that suits them. Sub-conciously people are afraid of change, so their mind will tell them to do what they are doing because it's safe and comfortable. For someone to completely wake up one day and change their lifestyles is a mind shocking event, that will most certainly be extremely hard and all your natural senses will be telling you it's wrong. From personal experience you gotta go on like that for a good few weeks before a nice routine settles in and you get used to it.

Just my 2 cents.

people have different things going on in their lives. they might not really be ready to be helped and they might not want to be.

if they choose to live a self destructive life style that only marginally has any impact on your own life and well-being, there's not much you can do about it.

it does not matter to me whether they choose to educate themselves regarding what they eat
i do not care if they eat healthily or not
they have the right to live a sedentary life if they wish

obviously i think they would lead longer healthier productive lives if they were active and ate well, but ultimately its not my life to live or pass judgement on

i do however detest any form of healthcare in which i have to pay one cent for someone else's poor lifestyle choices

I'm amused at the the whole thing myself. We get it at the gym too. The membership seems to triple after New Years. The fatties all come in and get on the treadmill for 15 minutes a few times a week in January, then by March everything is back to normal again.

😉

Don't even get me started on Donut & Bagel Fridays and the vending machines in the break room!

I was watching some show on the Travel channel, on fried food in Texas, and they had battered deep fried thick bacon slices. Oh man, I drooled about a gallons worth. Once in a while won't kill you!

That's the sad part about it, people treat it as a "oh hey this is a fun thing, let's try a lifestyle change". People just want the quick fix, so they will come in, sweat it out, get a huge burn in their chests, and after a week or 2 of no weight loss, they will give up.

I don't think they even do 15 minutes of good cardio anyways, because if they did they would start feeling better almost immedietely.

That's why I sort of respect the people that just tell you flat out "I don't give a fuck" and you go devour 70 chicken wings with them, as opposed to those that are overweight and lazy and think buying skim milk is helping them.

it's funny, I feel the exact same way about health care paying for pregnancies 😉

I think you need to let these feelings go. Its their lives, their lack of will power, and ultimately their problems they are creating for themselves. For every double cheese with bacon they scarf down as a 10am snack I'm sure you have your own non-food problem that other people pity you for.

We get free soda's here at work, and Chick-fil-a every Wednesday for breakfast. I can't digest a lot of fat, so the Wednesday's were out for me - but at the NY I decided to cut soda's and candy. I drank a lot of coke zero, probably a 12 pack every other day or two and candy quite frequently. Now, I have two bottles of tea that are in rotation in the fridge and I just try to reduce how much I snack - or keep it to generally lower sugar foods. I feel remarkable, and the tea has removed any effect whatsoever of the caffeine headaches. I'm trying to come up with some good snacks, it's just hard to keep a weeks worth of snack veggies in the fridge though.

What kind of tea? You're still probably getting a lot of caffeine from the tea, but at least it's better than all the sugar of normal pop.

I feel a bit of disgust, but mostly pity and frustration for these people. Of course they have to want to make changes in their lives and to make these changes permanent (not just diets or fads), but I feel that they get discouraged because they've been attempting changes incorrectly and they aren't getting the support they need to make the changes last.

It's tough for people to change their eating habits overnight. People get addicted to junk food and they suffer withdrawal when they don't get their fix. People get injured or stiff when they begin exercising too vigorously, and they can't sustain it.

Instead, they should be making small changes - substituting unhealthy foods for healthy ones, bit by bit, until their overall diet is healthier, and they are accustomed to eating well. At the same time, they should gradually introduce exercise (with physician supervision) and fun activities and continue until this becomes a regular part of their lives. Eventually, these people will be living new habits of exercising and eating healthy food.

Once you get to a certain point, healthy food and exercise go hand in hand. Your body craves exercise, and healthy food to sustain the exertion. I feel like ass on days I don't exercise, and I almost never eat junk food, as it generally upsets my stomach and makes me feel tired.

Lipton cold brew? Wish I could find out how much caffeine is in it ...

Meh, I don't give two craps about how other people eat. Whatever they eat is their business, not mine. Their lifestyle is their business, not mine. If someone wants to eat themselves to death or sloth themselves to death, by all means go for it. I couldn't care less.

A bag of chips isn't going to make someone fat. A doughnut isn't going to make someone fat. Living on that crap will, sure, but there's no reason to rant and rave about stupid shit like what's in the vending machine at work. If you don't like it, then don't fucking buy it. If you walk in and see a fat guy buying a bag of chips, who the hell are you to tell them what to do? Judging them isn't going to make them any healthier and will actually make you less healthy from unnecessary stress.

However, if you come in and there's some gigantic fat guy buying everything in the vending machine for lunch, maybe then it's time to be afraid 😛

A co-worker sponsored weight loss competition is an awesome idea for willing participants, as long as it doesn't alienate or ostricize those who choose not to participate. I wonder if my work has anything like that going 🙂

There's an enormous woman at my work - I mean huge. As in, you can feel her walking up and her car is permanently tilted towards the driver..

She acts like she's really thin. The other day I walked in the breakroom as she was heating up TWO microwave DINNERS at one time - she complained that was going to be late for a meeting that started in 30 minutes but was ~45 miles away.
Then she said she had to eat this before she left because she hadn't had a thing to eat since breakfast. It was 12:30 on the dot.

I was very WTF - if I was that big I definitely wouldn't be waddling around talking like that.

It's odd to me how overweight men seem (for the most part) clean, well kept, etc. Yes you have a nasty one every now and then, but it's not like fat women. Fat white women in particular are some of the most disgusting creatures on the planet. In my ~8 years in corporate IT (running an IT dept within non-IT companies) I don't think I have ever met a clean fat white woman. I've seen it all - lol, one time we found 1000's of Dove chocolate wrappers shoved behind a desk when a fat white woman was fired.. I've noticed they don't seem to have an accurate sense of their size either. For some reason they prefer very small cars and very small cubicles. I've seen many fans, plants, pictures, etc etc knocked over. There was a woman that would so big that she couldn't get inside of her corolla without BEEPING the horn. It was a 1 or 2 year old car.. She had to have that big when she bought it so I guess she didn't test drive it WTF. Think about the poor salesman on the test drive..

"Here we have a beautiful white corolla - lets take it for a little test drive!"

"clunk, plopBEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPP!"

"I'll take it, it fits me juuust right!"
