Topics people talk about when they have nothing to say

Everyone has experienced it before; the awkward silence you get when people have nothing more to say. Whether it's at work, on a date or with a friend.

What is your fall back topic, or what do people always talk about to break the silence?

Obviously the number one is Weather...
any others?

it's baseball with my coworkers

The only thing I know about baseball is that most teams suck(especially the Phillies) and the Yankees buy all of the talent they need.

I normally ask what they did over the weekend (monday and tuesday) or what their weekend plans are (wed-friday)

Silence broken with the sound of vomitting...
oh man, i clicked in the wrong thread. i meant to click on the 'what did you do this past weekend?'-thread. oh well, the same answer can apply to this thread too.

With a group of new people the what do you do for a living always comes up, and the local sports teams

"Local sports team is doing well, yes?"
"I saw the attractive girl who works in the next building"
"I don't like Bush and I don't like his administration"

I'm in my last year of HS, so I usually ask their plans for university/career.

As for other topics, stuff that's going on in my town. Sometimes weather if I don't know the person at all.

ESPECIALLY here in Seattle.

What's on TV is always popular, too. I hate small talk, myself...if I don't come away from a conversation knowing more than when I started, it seems like a waste.
