Proposed at home, but had a bottle of wine in me from dinner, so I had a little bit of liquid courage going for me :)

I proposed in private, right outside her parent's home. I wasn't nervous at all. My heart was racing a little, but I think it was because of excitement... :)

Nervous as hell! She was at a summer camp as a counselour. It was a Wednesday so she wasn't expecting me until the weekend. I took a half day off work, drove 4 hours to the camp in the mountains. I had a great plan where her friend was going to take her to dinner that night, but along the way she'd see these signs I had posted on the side of the road with messages for her. Well it started raining, I was in my nicest suit and shoes and started to get muddy and frustrated. So I said to heck with it and went straight to her cabin. She had just finished taking a shower, was in her room with only bra and panties on. I opened the door, she looked VERY surprised to see me in a suit, dozen roses in one hand and a box in the other. She kept saying to wait until she was dressed, but I told her I couldn't wait any longer, so I got down one knee, said something and she started crying. I took that for a yes, but I was so nervous I forgot to give her the ring, I just stayed on the floor on one knee until she asked if she could wear the ring. LOL. Anyways that was a little more than 9 months ago.
Ahhhh...happily joyously married! Good luck dude!

Ah, of course not. I will not be like in the movie "Meet the Parents". I'll carry my ring with me the whole trip, no one can touch it!

I was pretty nervous, and it was in private.

Advice, don't give her a temporary ring like I did. I had the jeweler making her ring from scratch and it wasn't ready by the date I wanted to propose so he gave me a $250 Cubic Zirconia ring to use as a stand in. Well, the cz was like 2 carats (huuuge) and she obviously thought that was her ring. I'm just glad she wasn't disappointed when she got her real ring, which was only one carat. :)

It took me a week to get up the courage to tell her that wasn't her ring. That was harder than asking her!

Yeah, whatever your plan is, DO IT! I didn't do it, and while she was fine with me not doing my little romantic sign thingy, I feel that it would have been that much better if I had. Women like to brag to their friends and I think I messed that up a little for her.

Wife Friend: So how did your husband propose to you?
Wife: Uh...ummm he got on one knee and gave me a ring...
Wife Friend: Oh, ok. MY husband got me flowers and took me out to a romantic dinner and proposed to me on a moonlit beach with the waves crashing...blah blah blah...
Wife: Wow, that must be nice.

Husband Friend: So how did you finally get the ball and chain.
Husband: I got down on one knee and gave her a ring while she was half nekkid.
Husband Friend: Cool!
Husband: Got that right!

depends on what type personality your wife is. Is she embarrassed easily? Then by all means do it in private or around close friends. Does she like to get on the pool table and strip tease when drunk? Then a public proposal is ok. I have a friend whose wife would have been mortified if he had proposed to her in a public place. She's very quiet and conservative and into the romance thing and he respected that. He proposed to her while she was at her parents house one evening after church.
You just have to know your future wife and what she likes and dislikes. Most women are ok with private proposals, most women want it romantically done, most women like a big ring. Some women don't mind public proposals, but having it appear on a stadium big screen at a football game to some women will appear cheesy. It might sound romantic to you as you are publically displaying your love and affection to her, but from talking to my wife and her friends they think it's just embarrassing.

ACK! I've been talking about marriage and proposing and assorted girly stuff. Quick someone find me some testosterone or a beer or both...

Just a thought... isn't the ICE rink closed for the season now?

Well, the first lady told him to go screw himself.

Then he realized he'd mis-dialed.
