Top Spinning Down

You've seen how a top wobbles as it spins down...That's kind of how it seems with my computer at the moment. I started to play a game (Kyodai Mahjongg) a little while ago, and it gave me an error saying something about not finding the video card and making sure that I had the latest driver (I do). So considering some other problems that I have had possibly relating, I uninstalled the display from the Device Manager and rebooted.

The boot hung on the Asus screen forever, which appears to be due to the fact that my LiteON Combo drive got lost and neither the bios or XP can find it. Finally, Windows started booting, but with alot of hang ups. The first time, it never fully reached the desktop and kept displaying a dialog that it was setting the personal settings. I got impatient and force shutdown the computer.

I tried something that sometimes helps, and shut off the power for about a minute...powered on and this time it got to desktop, but still without the combo drive and the HD LED remaining lit continously. I tried resetting my display preferences, which seemed to work, except that it couldn't find my second monitor (TV), so I clicked the "detect monitors" button and it advised that I should reboot again. Doing that and going through a similar routine as before, when I got back to the desktop, the display appeared on the TV as it should, except that I can't change it's background, and it's the same as on the monitor.

The long story is because, that while I would have a fair idea of how to deal with each of these problems separately, I find the combination confusing, because I don't believe in coincidences and figure that there must be a common root. The only thing that is common to all of these things that I can think of is the motherboard, but I'm hoping for something simpler. Any ideas?

Hours later, and the HD LED has never flickered or gone off. What is that caused by...the motherboard?
