Yesterday, a new show premiered on the History Channel called Top Shot. I first learned about the show last week when I was sitting through the pre-previews at the theater, waiting for MacGruber. They basically set it up as the best marksmen in the world will compete to see who ... is ... TOP SHOT.
What actually happened was it was like an elimination style reality show (like Survivor or UFC). This really turned me off to the show. The way it works is there are 16 competitors (including 1 woman) from all different backgrounds. They are supposed to be top in their class but it's apparent early on that they are just mostly average. There are a few people who are competitive shooters (think IDPA) and are highly ranked but some are literally just regular plumbers and construction workers who happen to like guns.
They are divided into two teams of 8 (Red and Blue team) and they do a team competition. Then whichever team loses has to decide which two members will go head-to-head in an elimination bout. What really is lame, to me, is that this is where politics and emotions come into play. I wish it was purely about skill, not how much someone likes you. Case in point, in yesterday's elimination match, the guy who screwed up and lost the game for the team was up for elimination. Makes sense right? His partner? This young kid who didn't have any part in the loss. The kid ended up destroying the other guy so he got to stay.
Other than the voting and elimination, the challenges are really interesting. It's cool to see how difficult some of the shots are and how not good some of these people are.
