Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the f117A Stealth Bomber kind of make it's debut during the gulf war in 91? The public didn't really know about it until then. Now, it is over 10 years later. Do you think we have more top secret aircraft to use on them - ones that are more advanced then the Stealth?

Yes the ones that drop bombs without anybody flying them, making their debut in afghanistan! As the US military gets more and more automated it will be really increase the gap between itself and other militaries that aren't on the cutting edge of technology. Who the hell wants to put their life on a line to take out an unmanned plane worth relatively little?

----

In 20 years the US will have a fleet of them piloted by the best Star Wars video game pilots taken from competitions. They'll give these people money to take their video gaming skills and apply them into a real combat situation controlling planes thousands of miles away.

OK maybe I'm talking sh*t now.

No. I think that since the end of the Cold War media penetration has became so complete that the informed public now knows about almost every 1000000$ hammer the US has.

Considring that the Blackbird (SR71-a?) was invented back in the 60's and was the basis of alot of the stealth bomber technology and capable of flying at stupid speeds, I find it hard to believe that the stealth bomber is the only update on that line of plane....

Actually it debuted in Panama, a few months before. By that time it had been in service since 1982 or 1983.

If memory serves me right, the first public presentation of F117 was in 1988 hosted by Reagan. Gulf War was F117's combat debut.

Not sure where you get your information.
SR-71 was invented in teh 60's by Clarence Kelly Johnson
SR-71 was not Stealth at all. It's speeds and height made it near impossible to shoot down by conventional missles, and the only plane that Russia ever had to attempt to combat it's flights was the foxbat, which as we're learning 20+ years later, was a bucket of bolts...but we were sure scared of it then (think f-15).

The F-117 and the B-2 are both listed as SubSonic only airplanes......so they're not at all basd on the SR-71 technology.....SR-71 was a Fast Jet on Massive Steroids.

The SR-71 did have a derivation they attempted to use as an interceptor fighter....the YF-12A, and the A-12 which both had a missle bay....but was only experimental......

The SR-71 did lead towards Pulse Jet (Scram Jet) engines, which are what the aurora, it's next derivation use. I dunno if the aurora has stealth capabilities.....as fast as it supposedly can fly, why would it need it?

Stealth technologoy on the other hands was a big big boon for the conspiracy theorists after it was released......mostly because of the extremely wacked out flight surface of the F-117 (flying cockroach), and the fact that a pilot needs a computer to aid in flying control....proof that Area 51 had alien ships.

The SR-71 was retired b/c of the extreme costs associated with the program. NASA still has a small fleet tho.

I don't know what the first derivation of the stealth was, but I know it wasn't the SR-71. Or the U-2 for that matter. The program was begun in the 70s though.

As far as the AF having some awesome inventory we don't know about, I'm sure they do. The ATF is pretty next level (super-cruise, stealth, directional thrusters.....) and the aurora is capable of speeds out of the roof......it's fun to imagine what sort of things they have in hangers that no one knows about.

I personally dont' think that in 50 years we'll have an air force like we do today. I think it won't even be remote planes.......but more like a space force for the aerial attacks.....lasers and EM weapons.......but maybe that's just my dreams of ultra-cool stuff.....

God I love planes :)

Have Blue was late 70's.

Tacit Blue was a bit later 78-85?

We crashed both of The Aurora jets a few years back and I understand that project is dead.

ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) is now the F-22, being assembled in Marrietta, Ga. Very few actually operational yet, but some are out.
JSF (Joint Strike Fioghter) is in process of ramp-up to production in Ft. Worth, Tx.
There are other things out, but if you find out about them we have to kill you.

Have Blue - from about 1979 - 1980.
F-117's were produced starting around 1981.

REF: The post below this one. I saw a prototype development GasDynamic Laser back in the mid 70's that was being used to study
what could be done with light energy from these type of weapons. 12 inch diameter hole in 2 inch thick steel plate from 1 mile out -
vaporized instantly, with a single millisecond pulse. Laser generated noise level of about 120 DBa, as loud as a jet engine.

Hi,

Just something to think about - having talked about to someone with some real knowledge on this issue - remember that the new "airborne laser" has an ambiguous arsenal. The laser used is touted as being great gor destroying ballistic missiles - but that laser can be pointed up as well as down with unprecedented accuracy also... The range is plenty to get to both satellites and ground targets. I believe the official line on this thinking is that "we have no information on that issue".

XB-70 Valkyrie had weight and stability issues.
Lessons learned were applied to make the B-1 Lancer
It WAS Supersonic until the Congress cut the budget and had the engines and nacelles 'De-Tuned' which
disabled the capability to reach supersonic speeds.

I hope not. That plane had like zero survivability due to the advances in SAM technology. That was the main reason it was axed.
It was a beautiful plane however.

well, I was wrong.

Aurora = an advanced hybrid of turbojet, ramjet, and rocket at least as it's theorized.

And no....I don't believe aurora is dead. We still need high speed reconnaissance aircraft.......not enuf satellites in the sky to se everything we need to according to experts
