Top of the line LCD or just under?

The 9 year old 17" CRT is slowly dying (yes! since '96!). So I'm going to purchase an LCD.

A quick analogy: I purchased a 6800GT just over a year ago on the advice that putting a LOT of cash ($440 is a lot for me) into a graphics card will pay off over time. And it has. I've played Doom3, HL2:S, CS:S, and F.E.A.R. happily with top notch graphics.

Do you guys think the same logic should apply to an LCD? I'm debating between a
Viewsonic VX924
and
Viewsonic VP930b

The price difference is about 100 dollars from Newegg.com. But if that extra hundred bucks pays off like it did with my graphics card (i.e. I got the 6800gt over the 5950) it would seem to make sense.

The extra $100 will definitely pay off. You'll be much happier with the VP930B (better colors, viewing angle, better measured response).

Yes, it's pretty much one of the best 19" LCDs you can get, but it's still no CRT. Viva la black levels!

Thanks for your help. I noticed in another thread you said to get theSamsung 970P if you can. I may be able to indenture myself in order to accomplish this, or would the 930b be adequate?

The VP930B would probably be good. But the 970P may have less backlight issues, and it's also faster.

Well, I have a 970P now. I wasn't able to really test other monitors with games (I went to COMPUSA and tried to mess with ones I was interested in, but I can't play CS:S there), so I went with the research and your suggestion.

This monitor is sexy. The colors are vibrant, the backlight is totally even (no X stuff or bleeding edges), and the swivel stand is pretty cool.

CS:S is playable, though I'm noticing ghosting. However, as we all know, the important thing is it doesn't bother me.

But the DESK SPACE! WOW! My desk looks so different without the CRTs on em. (I had two 17" crts).

I WANT ANOTHER ONE!

And they're selling them on Amazon.com for 499.99 (via J&R Electronics)
