FUCK

Edit: Next they will try placing something similar to the containment box they tried before. They seem confident this will at least capture most of the oil. We shall see.

so just now they are going to use the expensive robots to cut off the head and put a real cap on it., after the inexpensive solutions were tried first. hmmmm... sounds like the earth has a price. if this isnt a call for hydrogen or just electric cars then i dont know what is.

Sadly we are too entrenched in our ways for even this to sway us much I'm afraid. I would love to be proven wrong but I think it would take 2 or 3 of these disasters to get people to really change :(

What about the big dome they were building? Why didn't they just finish trying this the first time?

Damn it, I can't believe that I follow the news for this clusterfuck so closely, but it's like watching morons trying to figure out fire.

is it time to ask the russians how we should nuke the hole?

We should ask the Chinese who built the blowout preventer. "Hello mr Lei, yeah we have a bit of an issue here...... oh really,... I see... ok thanks", According to the manufacturer we have to "hit the off switch". BP Engineer "of course it seems to simple now!".

The dome was getting clogged with methane hydrates, sort of like methane ice. Hope the same doesn't happen this this next idea.

It's interesting that people want to blame Obama or BP for this. What these people really want is to have cheap gas and no bad news. If something does go wrong they want a scapegoat. Drilling for oil in the Gulf is a challenging technological feat and sooner or later it was inevitable that something like this would happen and collectively We the People wouldn't have it any other way.

Every now and again I have said that an Apollo-like national energy program is needed. Usually the response was that we're spending money on it. Nothing like Iraq, or the bailout or what passed for health care reform, but something.

By the time the TCO of this mess hits fully I expect a trillion dollar price tag. Guess who will pay for it? We the People.

We're short-sighted cheap ass bastards who would rather spend a dollar to fix a catastrophe than invest 10 cents to prevent it.

Although I've seen it mentioned quite a few times in CNN comments I don't think that blowing it up is really an option. Odds are it wouldn't completely stop the leak but would destroy the pipe almost guaranteeing no attachment point for caps, domes, and what-not.

sad but true. you have people whining and moaning at BP/Obama... as they drive off in their SUV's carrying groceries.

they obviously aren't thinking big enough. we've got plenty of nukes, if we use enough, the well will collapse on itself.

I haven't read the details, but my supposition is that any nuclear device would be sunk very deeply into the well and detonated in order to fuse the rock, creating in effect a mass of melted and re-solidified rock to act as a plug. I don't think it would require a huge device (relatively speaking), just something to generate a lot of heat quickly.

If that's wrong, I'd appreciate someone correcting me.

I posted this in the 'Blame Obama' thread, it belongs here as well:

Does anyone really believe that the US Government's job is to drill for oil?
Why do you think that the Feds should actually take over since they own NO ASSETS that can be used for oil drilling and production?

People cannot work at that depth, and a submarine is limited as to what it can perform in this capacity.

Torpedo it - for what result? To sink the BOP?
The goddamned BOP is the height of a 5 story building.
The containment cap they tried was the size of a 3 story apartment complex.
It didn't work.

Nuke it? do you really believe that would have a chance of closing a hole where the pressure is pushing up
at somthing like 75,000 PSI?
Yeah, we really need a hundred foot wide hole pushing radioactive oil out of a hole a mile deep in the ocean.

Quick! - Lets dredge up some barrier islands!
Sure, lets destroy the ocean floor just off the coastline to get unlimited volumes of sand.
We don't have huge quantities of sand available to dump on the edge of the coastline to protect the shoreline,
and all that will accomplish is to keep any equipment that can be used to collect the oil from getting in close enough to function.

If the most advanced Petrochemical Engineers in the world cannot come up with a viable solution
do you think that some mindless redneck bigot has a better solution?
