I was thinking about getting my brother a box of golf balls and a gift certificate to a nice golf course this year for xmas. Anybody live out here in NY and can recommend me one?

I know they play the US Open at Bethpage but its a public course and I heard the tee times are crazy. I guess a private course would be best but I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks!

You can't get gift certificates for private courses. If you could they wouldn't be private. Long Island has some of the greatest courses in the country, but almost all are VERY private. Bethpage Black is a real gem, but as you say, starting times are a bitch. For an easier alternative try either TallGrass or Montauk Downs. Those are highly rated, not too expensive and accessible.

Ah, that kinda stinks. I'll check out those other 2 but if I can't get a gift certificate do you think I should try and get something at Bethpage despite the horrible start times?

Depends on your brother, you know him best. I love Bethpage Black and would play it over the others if all else was equal, but I hate the pace of play and the starting times enough that I'd almost always opt to go somewhere else. If your brother is impatient like me and would like a really nice course without the hassles go for the others. If he's the type that won't mind putting up with some headaches to play a truly world class course, go for Bethpage.

Yeah I know.....I just don't want to ask him what he would prefer because I'd like it to be a surprise. He golfs a ton during the spring/summer but I don't know which is his favorite course. I think he played BP-Black once but not sure how he felt about it.

I dont golf much....I usually play one or two times a year when I get a chance. I just don't have enough time/money to play all that often. Plus, I'm terrible. :)

Already been said mostly, but most of the really highly regarded places (Shinnecock etc) aren't simply private, they're super exclusive private. You could go the front door and offer them 10k cash for a round and they'd laugh at you. You have to know someone if you expect to get a round. If you have any exceptionally rich blue-blood type friends, you might ask them. Don't ask lightly though, it's not a trivial thing...

Bethpage Black is almost weird in that it's very highly regarded and public. There just aren't many courses like that. If the times etc at BP black are bad, there are other BP courses, but they don't have nearly the rep of BP Black (I've never played any of them, so I can't comment on how good or bad they might be).

The Red is very very good. The only negative thing about the Red is that it's right next to the Black. At any other facility it would get raves, at Bethpage it doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves.

So one of my buddies recommended getting him a gift card to the NY state parks public courses.

Montauk Downs and Bethpage are both on there.

TallGrass is not a state park so I called over to TallGrass but nobody answered. I went to their website and just emailed them if they sold gift certificates.

If TG has gift certificates do you think it would be better to get it from there or atleast give my brother a shot at playing at some of those other ones on the NY State parks list?
