Top Gear : Two clips some might not have seen

That lada was so sweet. I can't be bothered to d/l the clip, but IIRC they paid the lotus motorsport chaps £100,000 to sort the thing out. Compared to the first time around the track unmodified (hubcaps falling off, dodgy suspension bouncing like it's made of jelly) it was seriously quick. They slapped a new engine in it, lightened the car, stiffened it and sorted the suspension. Serious beast...

I'd really love to own that car, simply because when you whup some boy racer you've done it in the least respected car you can possibly get. It would result in some seriously red faces!

The Lada handles so much better, after the modifications, but mind you, the Lada was supposed to be a cheap affordable car to get from A to B anyways, and not to race.

OTOH: Would Lotus do "beefing up" of any car if you asked them nicely enough? I really like their style 😀

Lada was designed to take the bumps on horrible Russian roads, not be a race car.
I think they did another test where they had lada and some other old cars longjump on a ramp, and the Lada got the longest distance, then landed and kept on going like nothing happened if I recall correctly.

You sure about that? 😕 I'm fairly sure the BBC wouldn't authorise a large amount like that just for one episode of one show, no?

Plus, I wouldn't mind betting that Lotus sucked down about half of that figure as "advertising".

lotus donated about £100.000 worth of work to the lada, top gear and bbc payed for the actual hardware, which was only a few hundred pounds
