top blowhole

so i have an extra silent 120mm fan laying around and thought i might try to make a top blwhole for my case. my temps right now for cpu are on load around 45C and my video card is 55C so they are not to high by any means. Would adding a top blowhole lower my temps at all or be at all benifical? (i might be OCing soon so lower temps now would be great). I chave the tools and everythign so it would be a matter if you guys htink it owuld lower temps at all or not. I currently have 2 exhaust fans 2 side intake fans and one front intake fan, all are silent so they dont move that much air. Let me know if you think it would help at all or just not be worth it

Well, you don't say what kind of case you have and that can make a difference. Personally I am a fan of blowholes. I have a Lian Li PC7 Plus with a top 120mm blowhole and a 120mm side window intake for a total of 4x 120mm fans. I think the extra fans make a big difference and the blowhole especially since heat risies. I can put my face up to the blowhole and feel the hot air being released.

I would go for it and use a radz grille on top.....that's my two cents.

From what I've seen, blow holes have questionable utility. And one large drawback - w/o blow hole, it's hard to feed your machine a beer; with blow hole it's a lot easier. Murphy's law says opportunity for snafu given is opportunity taken...

Blow hole can scavenge air from PSU and/or CPU so they both may run hotter unless you run the fan at absolute minimum speed - more like an enhanced vent than an active exhaust.

On my machine I have a side panel and a top blow hole. I had fans using both side and top and I have 2 front fans and a rear panel.

What Zepper said is very true! I have taken temps in all manners of configurations.
The upper blow hole from what I have observed has no effect on anything.
As Zepper said it could have an adverse effect.
Proper front to rear airflow is all that is really needed. Of the blow holes If you had your heart set on using one - for mew it would be the side blow hole rather than the top.

Good Luck!!

For some reason, I just can't get your link to work and I looked for your case at Newegg, but didn't see it. So I can't really say for sure about the blowhole, but from what you told me, you will end up with 6 fans running which could make for a pretty loud machine if it isn't already.

As I said, I have a blowhole. The case came with an 80mm blowhole but I made it into a 120mm. I am running an Antec Tri-Speed LED and it's running at around 1,000RPMs. Not sure on the CFMs for that, but it's set low enough that you can't hear it running. Some people like blowholes, others don't. I do as I know heat rises and it helps keep my over all system cooler. My mobo runs at 40C and my CPU is between 40-45C with an average ambient temperature close to 80F on most days. Both temps are within a well cooled range. But you may want to consider if you really need a sixth fan running. That's a lot of fans. The ultimate choice is yours though. You will hear the pros and cons from both sides.

He does already have 2 80mm side blowholes, so again you may want to ask yourself if you really need a sixth.

What does that have to do with anything?
I was relating my experiences with my machine!
You have no clue what you just said...
I have had as many as 11 fans connected at one time to my computer....
I stated nothing about his fans....
Again I was relating my experiences with the top blow hole.

Some of these mentioned setups, including cutting a blowhole for no particular reason except you have an extra fan, are like shooting in the dark. What will usually happen is more noise, little cooling benefit, and maybe certain components running hotter. Heat rises to be sure...so why do you need another fan on top, when a vent only might work better. In fact with porperly designed airflow, you might eliminate many of your fans....eleven fans? :disgust:

Take a look at this home-made case. It uses One 120mm fan blowing in on a Scythe NCU1000 heatsink, and vents all the heat passively through the side vent. (P4 3.4). This case also runs cooler when sitting horizontal...since the heat escapes more easily just rising up and out.

well from what you guys have said it seems pretty hit or miss on if it is really helpful, so i dont think i'll bother. As for having 6 fans thats not a problem since they are all silent fans (dont move much air but i hate noise) the cd drive is the loudest part when it has to spin the disc. other then that i can barely hear it. But thanks for the input

it has already been said, but don't bother with a blowbole. I would just use front to back air flow.

From personal experience with my rig, I taped up my side vents and have nicer temps (very slight difference but a little nicer). Not exactly a blowhole but the same principle, have the air directed to the parts you want cooled in the most direct way possible.

Excuse me jackass, I wasn't posting to you. I was using your post to demonstrate that in your opinion side blowholes are more effective, and since he has 2x 80mm side blowholes, he may want to think again about adding a sixth fan. BTW, your 11 fans really gave me a woody. I'm proud of you. Jerk.
