Top 80mm exaust fan grill cut in the case?

sep

I want to add a 80mm exaust fan on the top of my Antec SX1030B. I don't like the idea of a bulky fan grill on top. I recently seen the Falcon http://www.falcon-nw.com/index.asp case. It has the grill buit in the case. Anyone know how I can pull this off?

Thanks!

I was thinking of doing the same thing but i would bet my son would throw something in there, but anyway i would say just cut the hole then just buy some sort of thin flat grill and either mount it on the inside or the outside, or you could just dremel in some sort of grill by just cutting holes or designs out of the case then tap the screws from the top or use velcro to hold the fan in place or you could glue some brackets on the inside, I guess you have many options.

After using the tool on the case I'm going to have marks in the case that would require re-painting. If I go that route, what paint can match this case?

what i would do is get the closest color and if you are doing the top just paint the whole top this way it will blend better, or you could just use some sort of trim to line the hole, you could just take the side panel with you to some hardware store like homedepot and have them match it up for you.

Or you could take a 3/8" drill and drill a honeycomb pattern. Then you wouldnt' need a grill; the pattern itself would act as one. I'm laying out a guide in Illustrator right now, if you wanna check it out when I'm done, lemme know.

I'm interested, but what about the need to paint?

Well, there's a couple of things you can do.

1. Cover the area around the location of your proposed "hole" with a couple of layers of masking tape to prevent scratches if you slip. I use the blue "masking tape" used when painting. It has an adhesive that won't leave residue or strip off the underlaying paint when removed.
2. There are various products you can use to line the edge of the hole after cutting. This looks very neat if done right! You can buy a rubber "c" shaped moulding at some modding sites, but its usually kinda expensive, over $1.50 a foot! I've used "car door edge moulding" from auto parts stores with good luck. This is usually under $5 for about six feet of moulding. It's a little stiff, and goes around corners easier if heated with a hair dryer prior to installation.

Hope this helps...
