i don't understand how a company like allianz could be ranked better than a ton of other companies even though it had a 3.60 billion dollar loss granted their revenues were 142 billion.

Edit-i'm an idiot. its ranked by revenue.

You answered your own question. This list is based on revenue.

The interesting observation, although oil companies on that list are towards the top and have tremendous revenues, their profits are actually in line with the rest of the companies.

which is what I've been saying for years. Everyone is like OMFG OIL COMPANIES MAKE BILLIONS HURRRRRRRRRRR LYNCH THEM FOR THE COMMON MAN!!! yes, they make billions, but they SPEND billions to get it.

If you think that is silly, they actually bought the first company I worked for out of college...Sema...as a favor to bail out the owner of Sema even though there was little to no compatibility between the two companies. We were ultimately renamed to SchlumbergerSema...and then laid off.

Lots of people on here were screaming about it last summer during the record runup in gas prices, but the media seems to be equally ignorant for making all of the "OMG OIL COMPANY RECORD PROFITS!!!1111oneoneone" headlines in the first place.

Take some accounting class's and then look at the figures. There are a pile of ways to hide money, spend more on "projects", etc...

i'm well aware, however, BP is officially run out of london (though BPX is run out of houston, my father worked there for 12 years from back when it was SOHIO), and the others are run from other locations. jp morgan chase is nearly run out of houston (iirc, retail banking is headquartered here), but the company is headquartered in NY.
