AOL records your conversations as well

"Your AIM information, including the contents of your online communications, may be accessed and disclosed in response to legal process (for example, a court order, search warrant or subpoena), or in other circumstances in which AOL has a good faith belief that AIM or AOL are being used for unlawful purposes. AOL may also access or disclose your AIM information when necessary to protect the rights or property of AIM or AOL, or in special cases such as a threat to your safety or that of others. "

Actually on any network that uses one of my old company's security devices, your IT department gets a log of every IM message coming in or out on any of the popular IM networks.

Paranoid much?

well they keep all your email (even if you delete it)

And who told you that?

While that is true, its only due to being a responsible service provider. The only place your 'deleted mail' is stored is on backups. Yahoo! Mail, MSN Hotmail, Lycos Mail, Comcast Mail, AOL Mail, RoadRunner Mail, Shaw Mail, Telus Mail.. and (insert name here) corporation all do the same thing. But Google catches sh1t for it? This is a case of the media always looking for something negative about a product, and with google its not always that easy to do. Leave it up to the un-educated to spread mis-information.

I'll use the google NETWORK if and ONLY if I know a nontrivial number of people using it, and I can connect with a nonstandard client (GAIM). Then, and only then will I use it, and I'd still encourage people to use other networks if possible.

pretty big amendment there charlie. Also, the most overlooked one. :(

You make it seem as though stuff like this isn't already being done. AIM (as pointed out above) already does this. Privacy online is overrated.
