1) Religious Fundamentalism
2) Evangelicalism
3) Fundamentalist Born Againism
4) Evangelical Born Againism
5) Fundamentalist Evangelicalism
6) etc.

The biggest 5 problems happen to also be the most common routes taken in this country to spread hate under the guise of love.

On the other hand, we have religion. The major issue with religion is not the question of "Is there a God?" but about the morals people have set for their specific religion, then picking/choosing from this list to fit their needs. If a non-religious person sees the selfishness of a congregation then what draw would they have to join them if they can create their own morals from scratch to meet their personal needs? Religion needs structure and by selfishness alone the stones set in place many, many years ago begin to crumble.

With that being said, the main reason our country has as many problems as we do is simply morals. We are not a very united country as we would love others to believe. We stand alone most of the time in our own cliques and shun those who wish to join. Now it is easy to bash "religious fanatics" and "those who believe in God" but the fact is we need these people more than we ever have before. Not for God or for a "higher being" but for the moral fabric that seems to have ripped into oblivion.

Before everyone started saying "lack of personal responsibility", it would never have occurred to me to even consider that. I'm left wondering, what do you all mean by that?

You really think that's one of the top 5 problems in the country? Why? I'm not ridiculing your choice, just curious.

I love how people (the OP and others) put the erosion of liberty and then right below it a basic liberty of the constitution, religion. I guess you just have to be blind to see that the whole point of having freedoms/liberties is to not only to protect the majority but most importantly the minority and the extremists. I am by no means a pat roberson supporter or whatever that crazy lady that protests at funerals and screams at reporters on FOX, but it is their right to have their beliefs and be able to spout them off just as much as any gay pride parade. Whether you like it or not, you should support their rights as much as you would any others if not more, so when you are no longer the flavor of the week you will still have your rights.

Not really a suprise response coming from you. You would fit into my first paragraph. You put down other people's ideas and beliefs to make yourself feel like a better person or seem more intelligent.

I think the point of the country was to move away from a one church system. Going back to that seems to be taking a step backwards. In all essence a problem would be the recombining of the church and the state.

1. Lack of Responsibility
Come on people, I'm so sick of seeing people blame Grand Theft Auto for their killing of 50 people. Quit saying McDonalds made you fat when you chose to eat there for years. Stop blaming everyone else and BLAME YOURSELF for your mistakes and downfalls.

2. Our Poor Public Education System
We're falling behind the other countries in the world in our scientific development and development in areas that require good education. Why? Because people are disinterested in these areas during primarily, secondary and high school. The people that are interested are few and far between and are slowed down by our particularly poor education system. I hate sitting with idiots in high school classes, where they just slow me down. If our education system were proper, I wouldn't be wasting time waiting for morons.

3. The Government/Governmental System
What I mean by this is primarily the republican/democratic divide. It's like putting blinders on Americans and saying "either a democrat or a republican is your best choice" when it may not be the case. We should stop with this republican/democratic BS and give citizens the proper options. Another part of this governmental system notion is the fact that we're getting more and more corrupt in the senate and in the white house. Our president is kind of screwed up, I'm not going to lie. He recently gave tax breaks to the oil companies.. what kind of a dip does that? They're already making far too much money. How about that knucklehead Alaskan senator that was avidly defending the oil companies? They're clearly in his pocket. Our senate almost voting to ban the burning of the flag, only missing it by one vote, is just horrible. I can't believe our senators would seriously consider it.

4. The Improper Balance of Censorship
Taken a look at MTV music lately? They block out almost any word that will offend anyone. They block out God? They block out "shells." They block out any weapon, any curse word, anything. Taken a look at MTV's regular shows? You'll regularly see "bitch" dropped on there, along with a TON of sexual inuendo, fake violence, talk of violence, etc. Check out some primetime shows and you'll see even more sexual content. How about Desperate Housewives, eh? Yeah, they're going to block out "gun" on an anti-violence song (yes, it's happened, and I've watched the video recently,) but they won't block out Eva Longoria, or whoever that is, nearly nude. Retarded.

5. America's Intolerance of Foreign Policies/Customs
We hate the French. We hate the Middle East. We call all Muslims terrorists. We're dead wrong. If Americans were brought up to know the TRUTH about Islam and other religions, the TRUTH about countries, and more, then we wouldn't have gone into Iraq and attacked them. Most Americans thought it was an alright idea since they opposed the Middle East. Middle Eastern people aren't necessarily bad people, they just view the world differently. We need to become more tolerant of them and many more groups, or else we'll get into BIG trouble.

Just the top five from an intelligent 16 year old American :)

Edit:
#1: Lack of personal responsibility.
#2: Eroding liberties due to various casues
#3: Lack of the importance of family
#4: Lack of the importance of education in key areas
#5: Lack of assuming risk for one's actions.

BINGO!!!

The clear and obvious number one problem in the US is the lack of personal responsibility. And this is tied to the creation, and promotion of the nanny-state by the left. Along with this comes Demon's #2 on his list, which is loss of liberty. Socialism is anathema to freedom. You cannot be cared for without giving up your personal freedom.

to all those crying about obesity... your proving that you would rather place blame on a country then the people who made themselves that way, and ignore the fact that other countries are the ones selling the US the food (alongside US farms) to provide a surplus of food to all citizens of the US that can provide the money for it. The world is drivin by money, and to blame a country for having the money to buy food is outrageous. Blame the 3rd world countries for NOT taking the strives to actually create structured governments to provide for their people, blame those countries for not making an effort to create an economy that a structured government can live upon TO provide the people of those countries. Why in the hell should the US government be put to blame because we take up so much food? We have the economy to do so.
All the money spent in aid for the third world is wasted money. We give them money, all they do is provide food and vaccinations. That is all temporary fixes. We would rather save more lives in the now then in the future. If they spent that money to actually help structurize, then sure, those already dying would die, but they would have a better country for the future to save more lives.
is that not how the rest of the world works? Every country has to pay for the food, and every country had to start from nothing and grow to actually have a structured government of some kind and afford themselves the ability to provide for their citizens. Not every country does as well, but that is because not every country has taken the necessary effort to match the more luxurious of countries. India is catching on, China is too. not so much in food, but in the way of life and their economy.
