Hey everyone! I thought I would share this video with you that my mum and I made to rank the best 3 operating systems and worst 3 operating systems. Basically she has spent about 20-30 minutes performing similar tasks on 12 different operating systems made from 1985-2012. She has chosen the top 3 and worst 3 operating systems out of those 12 tried.

She tried the following operating systems:
Windows 1.01 (1985)
Windows 3.11 (1992)
MS-DOS 6.22 (1994)
Microsoft BOB (1995)
Mac OSX 10.2 Jaguar (2002)
Joli OS 1.2 (2011)
Windows 8 (2012)
Ubuntu 12.10 (2012)
Elementary OS Luna Beta 1 (2012)
Kubuntu 12.10 (2012)
Zorin 6.1 (2012)
Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon Edition (2012)

Hope you all enjoy the video ;)

Watch at this link then click 720p if you want HD ;)http://youtu.be/sYTOavWs6Aw

Please note the clips of her trying operating systems within this video are heavily shortened. If you would like to watch the the full experiences you can check out the unedited versions on our youtube channel OSFirstTimer. You can also check out the operating systems she tried that didn't make either of these lists ;)

You have Microsoft Bob!?

There were always rumors, you know, that Microsoft did sell a copy of it. But, there was never proof. Until now. Now we know they did, and sorta who has it! Your life as you know it is about to....well, it won't change. But you'll still own Microsoft Bob!

Depends on the task doesn't it? For example one might argue that Solaris is the most advanced OS in the world today but if the task is video editing it would be really hard to do.

The tasks are really basic... And she also reviews the OS as well as performing the tasks which takes up more time.

- What time is it?
- Write and save a text document.
- What's 48*32
- Customize the way your computer looks
- Turn of your computer

Bob was an os? I thought it was some crappy office spin off.

It was an overlay operating system with a "ultra easy to use" interface to help those who had trouble using windows 3.11 in 1995.

Every few decades there is a General overlay of human group behavior that sits above reality and truth and distorted positive functionality.

The current times (beginning of the 21st century) is characterized by high opinions stemming from Ignorance (kind like the way the black Plague was perceived, and the burning of the Which were in their respective times), and the strong need for Drama Queening (or Kinging).

Bob was Not an OS it was an overlay application that meant to work with Win 95 and help the computer ignorant. It was actually Not such a bad idea but it was before its time. The choice of making it like comics picture + the weak computers of its era could not handle its GUI demands, doomed it to public failure.

50 minutes is a bit much time to spend watching youtube out of curiousity. How about an executive summary to pique my interest some?

HAHA!
That was awesome. Very entertaining and your mom is funny.

Geeze Jack, stop posting ironically self-descriptive screeds and lighten up already. It's just an entertaining video, not the OS-armageddon. Unclench and enjoy.

Lol this video is a summary of my mums other 12 videos all about 20 minutes each. But to spark your interest...

Windows 8 made it to one of the lists. MS-DOS also make it to a list. Linux Mint made it to a list and Zorin made it to a list. The MS-DOS clips are really funny!

Is there a reason 6 of the operating systems are based on Ubuntu? Just curious

It would be interesting to see what she thought about Win8 if she used for a couple of months and got used to the interface. I kind of thought the same thing with Unity, but it grows on you. I have never used Win8 except to play with it on a 27" touch screen at Staples. I think once people get used to it its not going to be that big of deal.

What annoys me is that people rave about upgrading to windows 8 then download programs to bring back the start menu and give it the windows 7 theme so the windows are rounded again instead of being boxy. Why upgrade when you just avoid using everything windows 8 has to offer. You might as well stick with windows 7...

It might be interesting to get mom to install an O/S. It would show how easy it is(or not) for someone that isn't technically oriented.

That is true any thing like this takes time to adjust. When I first installing Ubuntu 12.04 I installed gnome. I was having issue withe it nobody else in the house. When i reinstalled 12.10 after a brief go with windows 7 I left Unity and I have adjusted. I just need to figure out to edit the dash setting to display what I want when I am trying to find something. Btw, I think windows 7 isn't real swift, so my expectation of 8 aren't real high either.

Too bad you didn't run Win ME, then you could have added 'Recover from BSOD' to the task list...

Never used Bob but its reminds of the Packard Bell Navigator which I liked.

Win8 has a lot of nice under the hood improvements.
