Hi. Long story short. I'm a long time apple user and now I've decided to switch over to HTC due to losing my iPhone 6 plus couple weeks ago ;_; (I'm still fuking mad and I want to kill the guy who took my iPhone)

Anyway, I want to buy a good HTC smartphone BUT I have no idea what model to get etc. I don't even know the latest model name. I really appreciate the help if you could list me the TOP 3 HTC smartphone to get so I can google them and whatnot. I don't have a budget price.
Thank you ():)

Agreed, altho I hear the M9 was meh.

And I heard that it's M8 that was rather 'meh'.

Anyway, if it wasn't obvious, I was half joking, because those are HTC flagship phones for the past three years. The M7, M8 were the top HTC phones in 2013 and 2014, but of course together they're not necessarily the three best *right now*.

If you want one, get the M8.

The M9 is actually worse, and more expensive to boot.

Get the M8 if you can get a good deal on it. Still a fantastic phone. The M7 had some serious camera module overheating issues and could result in bluish haze after a while in low light (I had this issue on mine), but was a good phone prior to that. The M8 fixed that issue and improved on some areas including battery life and speaker volume, though it was a slight disappointment to anyone expecting a massively better/different phone.

If you are getting a new phone on contract, the M9 isn't terrible. Supposedly after an update the camera is better than the initial tests showed. The Snapdragon 810 is what really prevents any really progress on the processor front... you might be better off getting an S6 or a G4 if you want a phone that's better overall, especially if the camera matters to you. The one area the M9 seems to still dominate is audio and speaker quality. Probably the best phone for music, as were the M7 and M8 at their launch.

Hi thank you. S6? G4? Whats that? Samsung 6 you mean? I don't really care about the camera tbh.

Putting variants of the M9 aside, the M9 is the best HTC phone you can get right now. It's just the Snapdragon 810 ended up limiting progress because of heat and power consumption issues, and the only solution to those issues is to throttle the CPU. The M10 won't likely be seen until next spring.

If you are set on getting an M9, I don't think you will be disappointed. I'd take an M9 over an iPhone any day. :D You should definitely consider getting the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4, though, unless you have a specific reason for choosing HTC (like if you are an audiophile). If the camera doesn't matter and if you aren't pushing the phone with non-stop gaming (or some other processor-intensive use case, like benchmarking) it's not a bad choice. Looking at a lot of newer photo tests with the M9 it's actually not a bad camera after the update, though... just not the best.

I did debate whether to get the HTC or Samsung but decided to go for the HTC phones for no apparent reason lol :D

1 - Apple
2- Samsung
3- HTC
4 - NO idea
5- NO idea
6 - brick

Frankly, I'd get another iPhone 6(+). If you must go Android, only the LG G4 and maybe the Note 4 could be considered to be in the same class.

If I had to rank smartphone manufacturers, it would be something like this, though honestly I don't like iOS on smartphones (I'll tolerate it for iPads because the hardware and app availability is excellent) but will still rank it high because the hardware, customer support, and camera are excellent. Prior to the S6 I would have put Samsung below Apple and HTC.

It's very rough list and just my own opinion (emphasis just so no one bothers to argue with me... everyone is welcome to make their own rankings) and nearly all (not Apple, but the Android and Windows Phone manufacturers) of them have lately put out decent mid-range phones to the point where the $200 to $300 off-contract phone is really just a commodity now:

1. Samsung
2. Apple
3. OnePlus
4. Nokia
5. HTC
6. Motorola
7. LG
8. Sony
9. ASUS
10. Blackberry
11. BLU
12. Huawei
13. Xiaomi
14. Alcatel
15. Oppo
16. Sharp
17. ZTE
18. Pantech

I want to dislike mine, I really do. I considered it a stopgap from the start. Just a way to stock up before the 810 storm, because I knew this year would be rough at first. But I am having trouble disliking it. The screen is very sensitive, like obviously more noticeable than the wife's Note 4. Knock to wake is nice, and the GPe conversion is the best thing this side of a Nexus (I got 4.1 before any Moto did). Oh and the battery life is great in my usage, and the screen is overall very nice.

The camera sucks, and as I said I really dislike the speakers, but I can't hate the phone. It will at least get me to a 2015 Nexus and maybe beyond.

Nice foresight.

I remember us talking about that very thing in October:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2405137

(Did you enable glove mode on your wife's Note?)

It is not really that the M8 picks up touches that the Note doesn't, it is that the M8 is more responsive about it. For example typing on the keyboard on my M8 feels like an iPhone, while any Galaxy device I have had it is a little more sluggish. It really isn't a huge thing, but its noticeable. I could live without it, but I don't think I will live without knock to wake again. That might have me rooting phones into my future.

Seriously, the M8 is a better device. Ah well, I guess the 9 might get M earlier.

Upping the sensitivity could help the keyboard, though. If it picks up touches before you actually touch vs waiting for contact... Beats me since I only ever Swype.

Knock on seems like a guaranteed pocket dial situation. But I have a physical home key that does the job anyway.

No Sony love? I was bored a coupla weeks ago and swapped out my jobs iphone 5 for an M8, dislike the M8 so I swapped for a Sony Xperia Z3v. I love this phone. Its nice, built well, has an MSD slot and dual front speakers that sounds pretty decent without having massive speaker grills like the M8. Camera is better than the M8 as well. Now only if they pushed lollipop to it.

Owning the M8, M9, and the G4, I would say the M9 is definitely up there in terms of flagship phones, and it isn't worse than M8, although people seem to very keen on spreading that particular FUD.

M8 v M9, In terms of battery life, it is roughly the same for both. Heat is a non-factor after the final software was released. Camera is definitely a lot better (sw 1.40) (for daytime). Actual performance, it is actually faster than M8, with better multitasking handling due to expanded memory, although its doubtful if you can really tell the performance improvements unless you have them side by side like I do. The software runs smoothly on both phones, unlike the G4 and S6, they are both buttery smooth even after a month of use (200 or so apps installed). Though to be fair, G4 and S6 have problems with software (poor optimization for G4, poor memory management for S6) which can also be rectified with updates if they get around to it.

Overall M9 is a premium phone, and it is a better phone than M8, but is the incremental upgrade over the M8 worth $400-600 is questionable, and different for each individual.

And no, knock on doesn't pocket dial.
