Not sure how they formulated that list. The number of crashes should be a ratio that represent a percentage against the amount of flights... or something like that.

That was taken into account in their RANKINGS, but then they reported the raw numbers once the list was generated. Which is a little deceptive, I agree.

The ratings take into account the number and deadliness of hull loss accidents and serious incidents in the last 30 years of operation in relation to passenger miles flown. The ratings also take into account international safety benchmarks such as the IOSA Audit and the USOAP country factor, along with a time factor which increases the effect of recent accidents.

One thing that blows me away is that Southwest has never had a passenger fatality, despite the fact that they currently operate over 3,000 flights per day. Even by the standards of commercial airlines that is an incredible safety record.

One of my old friends that used to intern at Boeing in undergrad said that they actually use SWA as a testbed for longterm airframe fatigue studies.

Apparently Southwest puts one of the hardest strain on their jets of any airline out there. They have a gigantic maintenance empire behind the scenes to make sure everything runs so smoothly.
