Top 10 Fuel Efficency Surprises

None of those cars are surprising.

The fact that they have two diesels on their list and it surprises them reconfirms that they are just another paid auto-rag.

They need to have a Mazda5 on there. A minivan that pulls 30+ MPG at speeds in excess of 80MPH and averages around 25MPG in town on regular unleaded. Seats 6 with sliding doors and second row captains chairs. There isn't anything else like it on the road currently.

The ratings on the Matrix and Altima Hybrid really aren't that impressive to me.

I'm actually puzzled that they didn't have the Altima as a negative surprise. They did a road test and it got pretty bad mileage (worse than the standard 2.5) and said they could barely nudge it above 30mpg realtime with extremely careful driving.

Yeah, the matrix is kind of lame mileage wise. Especially since those figures are the 1.8 FWD versions numbers.

To me the most impressive is still the Corvette. Offering 436hp/400ftlb while getting nearly 30mpg on the hwy (in some cases more) is truly impressive.

I can assure you that you will not get 30mpg if you use 436hp/400ftlb

Not really. 5 cyl inline diesel, quiter than most gas engines. Very pointed front.

Every delivery person that had them at the last expediting company I was at reported 20-30 mpg.

I was tempted to stuff one in my truck, but the fuse boxes and wiring are horrible. The fuses are all taped to the fuse box when imported so the fuses don't fall out. They had crappy connections

edit: I don't get why they have the Tahoe on there. The 10yr old version can get 20mpg on teh highway all the time and only a couple less in the city. GM's hybrid technology is shit in this case.

Not really sure why any of these are surprising. Wasn't the Tahoe the green car of the year recently? 21MPG in the city for a 6000lb SUV is pretty impressive.

Yeah. I love their opening statement too:

Zip it. Before you get your hemp panties in a cinch, reread the title of this article.

The Z06 gets absolutely amazing fuel economy too.

Impressive indeed

1998 Chevy Tahoe 2WD: 13 city/17 hwy

2008 Chevy Tahoe 2WD hybrid: 21 city/22 hwy

Very good, IMO, for a 6000 lb box.

Don't forget that when it was first released and many auto rags were test driving it they were getting up to 25 mpg average. Of course that was with very careful driving, but impressive nonetheless.

BTW, the new 2009 Silverado/Sierra hybrids will also get 21/22. Just thought I'd point that out.

What stooge wrote this article? Does he not read C&D's own reviews or look at their data?

The Altima Hybrid is the same car that C&D absolutely trashed in their print review because its as-tested mileage was so poor. Now it shows up as a fuel economy surprise? Try "nasty surprise" and you might be closer to the mark.

And to say the Tahoe hybrid matches the Accord V6's mileage is extremely misleading. Though they share city ratings, the Accord is nearly 50% better on the highway, where it counts. Was this intended to be some kind of joke?

No wonder I try to avoid their internet articles.

You're surprised that the 3.5 engine got worse mpg than the 2.5? 😕 But yeah, my dad's 2007 V6 Camry gets only 1 mpg worse than the I-4, that was a pleasant surprise as the 270hp V6 lets the car get to 60 in only 6.5s, but you won't get good MPG if you drive like that. 🙂

Haha, a new C6 Z06 blasted past us on the freeway coming back home from Arizona. His license plate read "26 MPG," but not the way he was driving it. 😛

I understand the concept, though. A big engine allows you to do freeway speeds without being at a high rpm, which is why the V6 Camry only gets 1 mpg lower than the I-4. Around town, it's the opposite, turbos/SC's aside.

The Altima Hybrid does not have the 3.5, it has the 2.5. So yes, it is surprising that the 2.5 hybrid gets worse fuel economy than the 2.5 standard, at least in C&D's initial tests (where the two cars were driven similarly).

Of course not, that applies to any mpg rating/car. You only use about 1/10 of the 436hp on the hwy anyway... In comparison to other cars with 400hp+ the corvette stands alone.

It's a 4-5k lb vehicle depeding on which model. Which gears were those mpg test from.

My mom's gets 23 on the highway at 70mph, 4wd, 5.7, 1996 model.

My dad only gets 18 and staying at 65mph, except same otherwise.

The only difference is rear diff gears.

Like I said though, the hybrid sucks ass, I would expect alot better inprovement. It seems like cadillac with the 4-6-8 all over again.

http://www.hybridcars.com/news...ybrid-first-drive.html

The first was a highway drive from Cape May, New Jersey to Falls Church, Virginia. The 238-mile stretch ate through a little more than three-eighths of the 24.5 gallon gas tank, and yielded just over 21 miles per gallon, right on par with EPA estimates.

The second drive loop was comprised of mixed suburban driving in and around the Baltimore metropolitan area. Here, we tested the Tahoe hybrid in the type of traffic that 90 percent of Americans experience everyday. The result was surprising. The 151-mile drive test gave us 24.8 miles per gallon, beating GM?s numbers by 15 percent. Again, driving style was very conservative.

24.5 city/21 hwy real world, sounds pretty good to me. I doubt there's another 3 ton SUV that can achieve anywhere close to those numbers. I'm sure it's possible to get even higher on the highway. But I do agree with you that you don't really need any hybrid tech with a good SBC. I'm currently getting 17 city and ~23 hwy with my '04 Silverado.

Too bad they don't sell VW TDI in CA.

I'm pretty sure the new TDI is legal in all 50 states... that was part of the hopes of MB and VW on the blutech engine. They stopped selling TDIs in all states after 07, however I think everyone will get 09's.
