Yabbut everyone seems to be forgetting that they surveyed British tourists who travel to these places, not the natives who live there.

Oh interesting. Mexico must be better at scaring tourists out of the non tourist areas.

I don't know about official Mexican government policy, but yeah, the drug cartels that more or less control terrifyingly large swaths of rural Mexico do seem to have a knack for that.

Im pretty lucky, can eat almost anywhere Ive been and not be bothered. Im just mildly careful. I worry more about the US really.

I got sick once on ribs at a brand new BBQ place and called them the next day to see if it was just me or they had a problem. What did they do? Offered me a free order of ribs! If it made me sick once, why would I try to do that again?

stupid study because they asked a limited amount of travelers from the UK, so there are all sorts of bias, and clearly Spain tops the list because brits go there to get shitfaced drunk.
I'm sure of the 3000 people they interviewed, not enough had gone to Burundi or Laos to give them a reliable statistic of the safety of street food in those countries.

What I do to stay safe is:
1. Don't trust drinkability of water, especially in less developed areas or old houses, until you know for certain. In Europe usually use it to wash my teeth though as in Europe it's mostly toxicity issues rather than bacteria or parasites.
2. Don't eat salad put as a decoration on your plate
3. Avoid ice
4. Don't order salad or fresh raw vegetables at all when in less hygienic countries

the only time I got really sick to the point I'd call it food poisoning it was due to cooked food on a ship that probably wasn't stored properly, can't do anything about that.....

TBH I'm actually surprised to see America on the list, but glad to see Canada isin't. :p
Though one has to wonder if that's because no British tourist got sick there (or rather, thought they got sick there), or because few if any of the 2000 British tourists surveyed visited Canada?

reliable statistic
I'm not disagreeing with your point about countries not represented among the "top ten", but moreover, considering these are basically self-reported cases of food poisoning, not necessarily medically confirmed, none of the survey's statistics is particularly "reliable" at all.

yeah of course, there's no way India and Morocco are less dangerous than France, Italy or Spain (consider that I've never noticed any difference in hygiene between Italy or France, and people definitely care more about cleanliness in Italy than in France).
